Calling Christians - any positive experiences of tithing?

Just curious as I'm about to give 10% of our household income to our church next month and I'm rather nervous as on paper we can't afford it and yet I feel led to do it
I'd love to hear any thoughts/stories!

Malachi 3:10 Bring the whole tithe into the storehouse, that there may be food in my house. Test me in this," says the LORD Almighty, "and see if I will not throw open the floodgates of heaven and pour out so much blessing that you will not have room enough for it.

I've always tithed 10% after tax and I have never had enough money. But I tell you one thing. Somehow we always have enough food and the bills are paid. My hubby is now unemployed as he lost his job but I'm given anonymous money in envelopes dropped through my door, food parcels etc I don't talk about my money problems but somehow people feel called to help us anonymously. It's amazing. I have so many testimonies of times when God has provided. All I can say is do it! It's biblical! You will be blessed in many ways through being obedient.

Thank you that's amazing - a very moving passage!
I'm very excited to be giving!
Would love to hear more

Just ignore the fact my hubby and I are currently separated. As God is still providing for me, despite how pants life is right now...

God never changes.

Too many stories, you wouldn't believe me. I'm sure someone else can add some of theirs later, once the kids are in bed.

I'm sorry to hear things are so tough for you right now teaandcakeplease, thinking of you and glad to hear you're being provided for!

We've just started tithing despite on paper not actually being able to afford it - but God has been gracious, we are never overdrawn and we have managed fine and feel really blessed.

Hello ladies.

Firstly, I have to admit that I am not titheing at the moment, although it is on my heart.

However, when I was working, before the birth of PFB (who has cerebral palsy hence me not returning to work) I decided it was time to take titheing literally from the bible, so I tithed 10% of my gross salary.

To echo teaandcake, I didn't win the lottery, but I was financially 'bouyant'. I even managed to accumulate savings for the first time (which luckily have kept me afloat for the last two years).

God is good. I am still learning, but He sure rewards you with obedience.

Your money goes to His loved ones who have none. But you will be blessed in order to be a blessing.

Yes, I can add equally positive thoughts about tything. We have done it for years now, through three different church changes (sending money to Tear Fund when we didn't have a church) and we have never had, in all our life a lack of money. Not that we couldn't have done with an extra tenner at the end of the month, who can't, but we have always had enough and to spare. God is very good and I would just go for it.
Pre tax or post tax? Ask yourself who is the most important in your life, God or the taxman?

Pre tax or post tax? Ask yourself who is the most important in your life, God or the taxman?

My only reason to do it after tax, is that this is how my family (mum & dad) have always done tithing. On what actually goes into our bank accounts. I do the same. I hope God can see my heart and does know he is more important to me than the tax man

madhairday · 01/03/2010 19:05

We do it pre-tax teaandcake. But I don't think there is anything prescriptive. you know what's right for you.

Like DutchOma I only have positive experiences. we've kept tithing even when having literally no money. And have somehow always found enough. We were at one point wondering how we were going to get school shoes etc. And got a sudden unexpected tax credit payment. Things like that - coincidence? Happened too many times ime.

It's a great thing to do - v enriching for the giver as well as the recipients.

DutchOma · 01/03/2010 19:35

No, there is nothing prescriptive about it and yes, of course God knows you love him.

Hello, thank you for your responses!
Since starting tything/tithing sp? My dh and I have had a free coffee each for no reason at a cafe and today we've had a bottle of wine given to us! Feels fantastic to be giving, to be doing the right thing and when we're given stuff it feels lovely that it's probably to do with god loving us

What a great thread to find. I've been thinking about this a lot recently, I really feel called to do it.

Because this in the internet and I am anonymous, I can say here quite frankly that we are struggling like anything at the moment. Both of us are working (me pt)but childcare costs more than my pay and DH won't consider that the most sensible thing for us to do is me stop work

God is good. God will provide. And this thread has given me the boot I need to go and tithe. Blessed be His name

onesouffle · 08/03/2010 21:05

That's great littlesilver.

Didn't have to pay for the car park today

God is good. And when He tells you to do something, and you do it, it works

AKMD · 16/03/2010 14:33

Coming in a bit late here but... DH and I both pay tithing (before tax, although that is a personal choice) and we have never, ever gone short, even when 'on paper' we were going to starve. It is one of the best things we do.

veryconfusedandupset · 19/03/2010 15:42

Presumably you can pay net, use gift aid, and the church can recover the tax?
