Any Catholics - is there a standard amount to give for a first communion?

Dh's niece, who is also our God-daughter is making her first communion soon.
We are not sure of what to get her and the general answer we have been given is money - anyone have any idea what amount will seem right?
Also, is there an easy way to explain to 3 yo dd what is happening? We are Christian but not Catholic and tbh I am not completely sure what it means

I personally would give the same amount I would spend on a birthday present.

Does your 3yo understand about communion? If so, its just a question of explaining it is the first time for your GD/niece, and is a very important special time for her.

Standard presents are a children's bible, some sort of christian children's book, or a cross and chain, and a nice card.

I would probably explain to the three year old that your niece is making a special promise to Jesus for the first time, which means she can take communion, the special piece of bread from Jesus.

We never give money: we'd give a missal, cross or perhaps a book token.

dd has seen me take communion but I don't think she understands it at all yet really. The 'special promise' is a good way to explain it I think.

You can also get some lovely childrens books about different religions.
