Unless you truly understand the culture and the significance, I really don't understand why you have to poke fun at what others believe? (and no, I'm not Muslim)

Flamesparrow · 06/04/2009 08:27

If their belief works on facing the right way, then it makes sense they are upset

ummadam · 06/04/2009 15:13

It's important to us that we face Makkah when we pray.

It's important to us that we do the best we can to make sure we are facing the right direction.

When we are unsure or can't work it out we guess and leave it up to Allah knowing he will be pleased that we have done our best.

Unfortunately sometime people get a bit too worried about the rules and regulations, believe everything they are told and don't think things through properly* and forget that doing our best is all Allah requires of us.

*Not a trait that is particular to those of the muslim faith unfortunately

'fgs?'

For whose sake, ablesister? Not sure I understand you!

fuzzywuzzy · 06/04/2009 15:36

What does this have to do with anything at all??

Why are you so dreadfully upset and moved by this space filler?

I'd imagine the older mosques would have slightly skewed mihrabs, it's hardly a big deal for non-muslim, nobody is asking the tax payer to fork out for redecorations (darn ain't that a lost oppurtunity to get all outraged).

I doubt anyone outside the local congregations gives a hoot.

Muslims all over the world pray facing the same direction five times a day. It means a whole lot of nothing to non-muslims, and understandably so. Hardly news worthy stuff!!!

onagar · 06/04/2009 15:39

I was told by a mormon priest (in front of other mormons who didn't object) that if you get one word wrong in a prayer or even pause incorrectly then the whole prayer is invalid and not acceptable to god.

So this kind of thinking is not exclusive to islam.

LuluisgoingtobeanAunty · 06/04/2009 15:40

what a rude OP

for Muslims and in fact for Jews, the way you face to pray is inherently important

call it superstition if you like, but it is part of their faith and not appropriate to be so dismissive

we don't have that in Islam onager.

prayer would only be invalidated in those circumstances if you got it wrong because you were daydreaming instead or if you hadn't bothered to try and learn it properly. If you tried but made a mistake your intentions would be counted anyway.

onagar · 06/04/2009 16:38

I'm sure it doesn't exist in islam. My point was that it would be unfair to point a finger at muslims when you may encounter that kind of thing in any religion.

ummadam · 06/04/2009 17:01

fair enough - sorry I misunderstood onager.
