How kosher will you be for Pesach?

Just asking as my prawn/lobster eating B and SIL have decreed that my children can't have their usual breakfast cereal/rice cakes/pasta etc while we are away in a holiday cottage in Devon.

My PIL (who keep kosher) usually stick with no bread, and we all love matzos but this just seems excessive as they (my B and SIL) don't stick to any of the dietary laws (except pork) for the rest of the year.

Rant over. For now.

I think a lot of Jews do be a little more strict over Pesach. But I agree, its a bit silly.

Either you keep kosher, or you don't.

Personally? I think the bacon sandwich I had today leans towards the don't side.

LuluisgoingtobeanAunty · 05/04/2009 21:45

i don't keep a kosher home, but i will not be eating bread ,cakes etc anything leavened, and encouraging the children to eat matzah

fully accept the hypocrisy of my behaviour though

i do like matzoh meal porridge for breakfast at pesach

Tee

Lulu. The kosher frosties are foul.

I'm waiting to see if SIL gets out a feather and a candle for the cottage

the chocolate coated matzoh is worth a go

PussinJimmyChoos · 05/04/2009 22:34

What is Pesach please?

LuluisgoingtobeanAunty · 05/04/2009 22:37

also known as Passover..to celebrate the exodus of the Jews from slavery in egypt , the egyptians were strcuck by ten plagues, but teh angel of death 'passed over the houses of the jews and they were able to leave egypt. i would do some links but on an unfamiliar laptop !!!!

LuluisgoingtobeanAunty · 05/04/2009 22:38

we are not supposed to eat anything leavened or risen.. as the jews left in a hurry, with no time for their breadto rise

PussinJimmyChoos · 05/04/2009 22:39

Oooh...I didn't realise it was Passover

I watched a programme about Jewish people once - one woman was doing this ultra deep clean of her kitchen for religious reasons - why is this? Kim and Aggie weren't even coming around!

LuluisgoingtobeanAunty · 05/04/2009 22:40

the ulta religious get rid of any crumb of eavened bread and /or food that has not been certified as kosher for passover

PussinJimmyChoos · 05/04/2009 22:42

Ooh this is interesting and some people have separate ovens??

Lulu - are you going to give me Goran for passover?? I don't think he's kosher...

LuluisgoingtobeanAunty · 05/04/2009 22:45

yes, he can have a little break, don't give him too many easter eggs if you do easter at all. don't weant him all flabby

the religious will have two more sets of dishes and cutlery for passover, one for meat and one for milk, in addition to their two year round sets.
some do have ovens for meat only and a seperate fridge and dishwasher etc

PussinJimmyChoos · 05/04/2009 22:47

So why can't the meat go in the same ovens?? This is really interesting

Nope, don't do Easter at all, but will of course, accept any chocolate that passes my way so as not to offend anyone in my family

LuluisgoingtobeanAunty · 05/04/2009 22:50

when keeping religiously kosher you have foods categorised as meat, dairy and parev . parev is neither meat nor dairy

you cannot eat or cook meat and milk together,so no lasagne or cheeseburgers . some people do keep it seperate to the point of cooking meat in one oven and having anotehr for non meat, and one dishwasher for meat plates etc

PussinJimmyChoos · 05/04/2009 22:53

Thanks Lulu - I love learning about other religions

LuluisgoingtobeanAunty · 05/04/2009 22:54

hope i got it all right then!

PussinJimmyChoos · 05/04/2009 22:57
