make easter garden on Good Friday - planter with plant pot 'tomb' with stone in front, twig cross, path of stones and then planted up with pretty flowers - sit it on front step

do resurrection cookies easter sat eve - are meringue type things - each ingredient you read a bit of the Easter story from the Bible - put into oven which you tape up (sealed tomb) in the morning meringues are cooked but hollow - like empty tombs - we eat them for breakfast.

do egg hunt in the garden after church

In principle, I'm going to make a really beautiful Easter garden with them. Like this glorious and tasteful one. Although I suspect that the end result make not be quite in that league. I love the idea of modifying it through the week - so will have cress growing to make grass, and will put caterpillar in tomb, to be replaced by butterfly on Easter morning.

Our local churches have a Walk of Witness around town on Good Friday, which I think I will encourage DD1 to come on, to make her aware of what day it is. And worship on Easter Sunday morning is always joyful. We have a bare wooden cross at the front of the church, which we bring flowers to decorate as a symbol of new life.

I suspect there will also be an egg hunt in the garden on Sunday morning, even though that's not very Christian. MIL has sent about a million small chocolate eggs, so we are going to have to make use of them somehow!

Nice roast meal with pretty table and flowers to make it special.

Frantic packing on Easter Monday, so we can go and have a holiday with Granny on Tuesday - yay!

x-post PandaG. I love the resurrection cookies! What's the recipe?

Smithagain · 05/04/2009 21:32

Oops - garden link seems to be broken. Try this one

we use chocolate rather than nuts as I am allergic. I will also make Easter biscuits - bunnies or chicks, and let the childreen decorate them - not Christian per se, but making the occasion more of a celebration. last year I did a craft party for all the girls in DD's class, where we made cookies and buns and Easter baskets, and decorated eggs too

Thanks ladies, these are great ideas!

We got lovely Christian "Jesus is alive" type stickers and ds (not very crafty at all!) enjoyed making some Easter cards yesterday. He made a wee garden at school. I've made some wee choc nests with shredded wheat and choc and put wee eggs in (not exactly Christian but there you are!). Love the resurrection cookies!

We have an early morning service next Sunday that ds is keen to go to but I'm not loving the idea of waking the house that early (my girls will be in meltdown big time by the family service at 10.30am!)

That's a great recipe/activity PandaG - we may well try it. And DH is allergic to nuts, too, so good to know it works without them.

Is there a Good Friday service at your church and a walk of witness? We have a lovely one in our village.

PandaG · 05/04/2009 21:57

my tip is to get the children washed and in their pjs while the egg whisking is going on.

this year forthe first time we have made an easter tree - ie a twig stuck in a pot. the idea was to add leaves to it with prayers on (DS has added one) but I am also planning on adding flowers and chicks and eggs etc this week to it

tassisssss · 06/04/2009 19:50

Panda, tell me more about the Easter tree thing...it's traditional isn't it?

Easter tree traditional in Germany I believe. I think some people decorate with decorations that suggest Bible verses/stories that link to the Easter story, but I am just doing flowers and chicks etc this year - might do it again next year with links to the story. I just want Easter to be marked in a similar way to Christmas, so as a family we have traditions which build up expectation.
