I am happy to say I am Buddhist. I came across Nichiren Buddhism through a friend of mine. It took me a little while to grasp the chanting (I used to get headaches and thought it was utterly ridiculous). Chanting Nam Myoho Renge Kyo has kept me sane, has helped me to focus, become patient and more lucid. It can be evangelical but it is up to you how involved you want to get. As with most organisations, we need money to keep it going, I have never contributed money but like to buy incense sticks, books and so on in the shop at the centre.
It is up to you or how long you want to chant and how much you want to read and study.
What I have found mind blowing is the people I have met through the practice, people of different background, colour and creed. We have a once monthly discussion meeting ---We get together at someone's house, we chant for 1/2 hour and an hour to discuss anything and everything. Kids stuff, challenges we face at work, we discuss how the practice helps us on a daily basis.
Personally the practice has helped me to get through a painful divorce, it has helped me to feel grateful and feel no hatred for a man who has physically and mentally abused me for 14 years.
Nichiren Buddhism is all about gratitude. We all have the potential for Buddhahood. I quote "when chanting Nam-myoho-renge-kyo the Buddha state quite naturally emerges from within, enabling us to draw on our limitless inner resources and actively contribute to a creative and peaceful society"
That has got to be a good thing!
The people I have met are my network support and my friends.
