Precognitive dreams - do you think they are real?

Just wondering what you people think about these, especially those who believe strongly in religion.

I'm talking about dreams where people dream of an event that actually happens.

This is slightly different perhaps but I often get to situations which I know I've seen before in a dream. Most people would just call this deja vu but I think this is different because I know what is going to happen, even exactly what people are going to say.
Normally it only happens for about 5-10 seconds but I've had occasions where it's been over a minute.

I don't have these sort of dreams about events that are going to happen, but I have it about places that i am going to visit in the future.

Many times in my life (starting in childhood) I have visited a place for the first time - a road, a group of roads, a house sometimes - and realised I have dreamt about it before. It isn't the same as de ja vu - it is a clear memory of a dream.

I have no idea what it means or how it can be explained, as I am an atheist and don't believe in the paranormal or things like that.

I know it's not deja vu because I know what's going to happen.

I'm doubting of most of the supernatural but don't see how else this can be explained

I used to keep a dream diary and when I read it several years after I had written it, there were three particular dreams that had come true and they were all things that you could never predict would happen. I'm not sure what I think it means as it could be pure coincidence. I do believe that there are dreams that are sent from God and meant to be interpretted though. I also have lucid dreams which is pretty fun

dontbitemytoes · 08/01/2009 20:24

hehe MrsMattie, by the time I came to read your second post I knew exactly what it was going to say

I have these very often but since I can't actually prove that I dreamed them, I assume it a trick of the brain.
On one occasion, however, that was not the case.
I dreamed an event in minute detail and described it to my sister (also a mumsnetter - if she finds this thread she can confirm).
That day, the exact event happened right down to the tiniest detail. My friend witnessed this side of things. It felt the same as all my other 'deja vu' experiences so I thought nothing of it until ten minutes later when I realised (with some horror) that I had actually already told someone so I had to have actually dreamt it.
I raced home and ordered my sister to describe my dream back to me which she did.
So I absolutely KNOW beyond a shadow of doubt that on this occasion, I really did have a premonition. This was nearly 20 years ago.

As I said, I get this feeling a lot but have never again been fortunate enough to have proof. (and usually I don't remember the dream until the event is happening so it still could be deja vu)

Totally believe in premonitions as a result.

You know exactly how I feel when it happens, although it's far freakier if you realise whilst during what's going on that you've already known about this.

There is a thing you can learn called 'dream recall' which helps you remember your dreams. Just google it and you'll find how to do it - it's really easy. I was sceptical at first but I've been doing it for 5 days and the first three nights I only remembered sketchy details about 2 or 3 dreams. Now I remember 1 or 2 in detail and sketchy details about another 2 or 3 each night, and I have a dated record of it.

The reason I do it is because I believe premonitions have saved my life twice and predicted a few other things too accurate and detailed to have happened by chance after I dreampt it, but as you say I've never had proof so people are sceptical.

If you do remember your dreams you'll soon realise which are dreams and which seem like real events.

I have had one or two, but they are so random, and most dreams of mine don't come true, so I put it down to chance and the law of averages.

SunshinePine · 10/01/2009 23:34

yes, but when you get an exact description of the event which happens, the chances of you randomly dreaming that are almost infinitely snall. Chance wise virtually nothing.

I had a couple of months when i got my first house when i wondered if this was happening. It took me that long to realise that i could hear news reports dp was listening to (open plan living!) whilst in first stage of waking . That was the end of me forcasting world events

BoffinMum · 10/01/2009 23:37

Suppose.
I have dreamt exam questions, property negotiation outcomes and things like that, which has been helpful.

morocco · 10/01/2009 23:37

there is supposed to be an explanation for that feeling you know what someone is going to say before they say it, basically a time lag in your brain somehow

RiaParkinson · 10/01/2009 23:42

kate Bush talks about it in 'strange phenomenon'

SunshinePine · 11/01/2009 18:39

morocco - The time lag thing is about deja vu when your brain mixes up the present with the past, meaning you feel you've already been there because it's in the history of your brain. This could in very extreme cases work with people speaking but you'd be acting as if you were a second or two behind everyone else for it to work.

I'm talking about things you know are going to be said in the next minute or so.

I have had many precognitive dreams usually the night before they happen.

The first time I recall this happening was I dreamt I was on a train and it pulled away from the station but then stopped and went backwards towards the station, the next day this happened, I always sit facing the direction of travel on a train as hate going backwards so this is how I knew.

Have also dreamt someone at work came in and announced she was pregnant, I told everyone this and she burst out laughing, a few weeks late she announced she was 12 weeks gone, everyone was

There have been several other ones including seeing a positive pregnancy test before I did one.

Oh and another very random one about seeing Spiderman crawling up a building just that image, the day before a Fathers for Justice campaigner scaled a building dressed as Spiderman, thats bizarre have never heard of FFJ before that.

SunshinePine · 11/01/2009 19:01

Mine are generally quite a while before they happen, but I believe 2 saved my life and I know my Grandma had one that saved her life so I'm not complaining!

I had the same dream on many many occasions and it was alsways the same start and ending which was finding myself running down a glass tunnel and getting to the end there was a wall and could go no further. Someone came and helped me and comforted me.

Explaination: My mum died in hospital a few years ago, she was in intensive care for a few days, as she died I ran out of the room and yes down a glass corridor where the nurse came chasing after me and cuddled me till I calmed down,

sasamaxx · 12/01/2009 09:12

Wow sunshinepine - I'm def going to try 'dream recall'
