and the crosses were taken down, so not to offend non Christians.

Considerate or too PC?

Too PC.

AbbeyA · 10/10/2008 08:30

However I suppose that you could say it was a Christian attitude to consider others!

seeker · 10/10/2008 08:36

I think it shows sensitivity and awareness of others needs. It didn't do any harm, it was easy to do, and I think is a thoughtful gesture. I would prefer my child not to sit under a cross - particularly if it was a crucufix with Jesus on it - to take an exam. Well done them.

AMumInScotland · 10/10/2008 09:41

I think if you mean in the room where the exam was, then it's a polite gesture - children of other faiths might be unsettled by having a cross right there in front of them. But it would be a bit OTT to remove them all through the school.

seeker · 10/10/2008 10:41

I agree - just in the exam room. And perhaps in the reception area if there's one of those particularly large and graphic ones like they had at my school.

LynetteScavo · 10/10/2008 17:58

I did't think anything of it either way, but a couple of mums I know (CofE) thought it was a step too far.

I presume they were crosses and not crucifix. TBH I'm not sure crucifix are healthy in any school.

Too PC and totally non-Christian to be ashamed of the central image in the Christian faith.

We have crucifixes with corpus in every room and I don't think they offend anyone. We have loads of Muslim and Sikh girls - the crosses don't scare them (I guess they aren't vampires).

onager · 14/10/2008 08:25

As an adult atheist I wouldn't care (though I think effigies of torture victims are seriously out of place in a school) but perhaps I should be offended that they wouldn't have taken them down for me anyway, but would for the sake of other religions.

Freckle · 14/10/2008 08:35

I don't understand why anyone would be offended by a religious image in a religious school. As a Christian, I certainly wouldn't be offended by the Star of David in a Jewish school if I had to go there or send my child there. Likewise I would not be offended by any Muslim insignia if I had to enter a school run by them.

What's to offend??

AMumInScotland · 14/10/2008 09:01

If you were 11 and had to sit an exam you were very nervous about, I think having to do it under a large cross or star of David or Muslim crescent or other symbol of faith could be unsettling and therefore to some extent "unfair". Not that it's offensive as such, just that it might distract you and make it harder to concentrate.

onager · 14/10/2008 10:01

I suppose to some people the symbols would be distracting. Imagine if you were borrowing a hall used for political meetings and it was the Nazi cross on every wall.
