Quick question on BAPTISM for any folk of the cloth or knowledgeable types out there

My son has and is registered with a particular Christian name but he has always been known by the diminutive form.

Please can anyone tell me if he can be baptised with his known name or does it have to be the name with which he has been registered?

i think the baptism would be in his registered name for the purpose of the pouring water actual baptising part. Probably if you spoke to your priest he/she would be hsppy to refer to your ds by his preferred name (unless it is really way-out)

LittlePushka · 06/10/2008 22:00

Oh not way out! Very normal! His name is Edmund but we call him Ted!!

i can't see any problems with him referring to your ds as ted for the rest of the ceremony, if you would prefer.

although, surely this is a grand occasion to roll out the full name?!

LittlePushka · 06/10/2008 22:19

ANd indeed it is a grand name as we have a couple more in there for good measure! I just wanted to have referneces to him with his given name as it makes it more personal as it is him...IYSWIM.

Gorgeous name. St Edmund King & Martyr and all that!
Ask the vicar to refer to him as Ted at some other point, but the baptism itself is always the full name

LittlePushka · 06/10/2008 22:39

Aww thank you Marina, you heard of him too I see!

Thank you dear MN folk! That solves that then!

You can be baptised in a completely different name if you like - some people take a 'baptismal name'. So no problem using the diminutive, and it is quite common to simply use the name the child is known by.

DS3 is being Christened in November, all the invites will be going out with his full name and then what he's known as in brackets before the surname.

At the service I've already asked my vicar to refer to him as TK (which everyone knows him by) apart from the actually "baptism" part.

LittlePushka · 06/10/2008 22:55

Ah, different answer!! I must admit I thought that the baptismal name could vary from the registered name but have no real idea on such matters.

Thanks HermioneG34 !
