Is sunday school apropriate for my 3 year old?

My 3 year old daughter has been going to church all her life and we have recently started going to my mother in laws church with her.
My daughter loves the music and sings her little heart out. Her uncle is in the music group and she loves to watch him. She is very well behaved but does get a bit boared through the serious bits.
We have been asked wether she would like to go to the sunday school they have there. I don't know wether she should go or not. All the other children are older than her so I don't know what she'd get out of it. She also has a speech disorder which makes it very hard for people to understand her. I suppose I'm just very protective of her. The reason she likes comming to church is for the music and being with her family and watching her uncle sing. I think she might miss out on all of this and I'd be worrying about her. What do you think? is it expected that all the children go? .

My ds and dd started going at 4. But I suppose it depends on what the activities are and whether they're appropriate. Lots of singing at our sunday school

Is she confident generally? My dd had a speech delay but was very confident without me around even then.

She is confident at nursery because she loves her teachers. She is quite shy away from me if she dosn't know the people. I am her interpretor so she knows that without me there, people won't understand her who don't know her so she tends to become withdrawn.

If she's enjoying herself with you, there's no need to force it. She's very, very young. Plenty of time

Maybe I should have a word with the teacher first to see what she thinks. She is acctually a retired teacher so she is experienced. I might ask wether she could go on alternate sundays or only when she wants too.

Well, if you want to start the brainwashing early, then yes send her a 4.

mummyloveslucy · 07/07/2008 19:33

you're right, she is still very young so I'm not sure she'll understand any of it anyway. I like having her with me as I love watching her sing and say Amen, very loudly in all the wrong places.

We could try, I think I'll go with her first.

My dd has attended Sunday school since she was a toddler. She is 3 now and she loves it, but it helps that I am the sunday School teacher

Beyond the most obvious statements (Jesus loves us all, we must be kind etc etc etc) I suspect that most of it does go over her head, but tbh I think that is beside the point; she loves going, she enjoys the activities (colouring, arts and crafts, games, singing etc) and it is engendering in her a love of going to church.

my ds started at 3 and loved it

dd is in church creche atm but will start SS at 3 too.

well done for having a LO who's good in church, my dd (who happens to be the minister's daughter) is ridiculously noisy in church and distracts her poor dad no end!

mummyloveslucy · 07/07/2008 20:05

I find a huge bag of sweets helps. It's harder for her to talk with her mouth full.
She does tend to answer the vicar though somtimes, when he makes a statement like jesus loves you or somthing Lucy souts out "Yes, I know!". This causes a few laughs.

Cute girl!

My dd (also a Lucy) shouts "'ello daddy-o" which is also very cute, but rather distracting for her poor dad. Thankfully there's a creche option!

mummyloveslucy · 07/07/2008 20:34

Aww, that is sweet though. I'm sure the congregation love her.

Our children's groups start at 2.5 years. We have loads of 3 year olds.

My cousin, in reply to the priest's assertion that "one day you'll all go to heaven and see God" yelled out "I'd rather go to Gotham city and see Batman"...
