Deepak Chopra and the search for the 'True Self'

So many troubling revelations in the Epstein files, including 3,000+ mentions of New Age writer Deepak Chopra.

In March 2017, Chopra emailed Jeffrey Epstein:
‘God is a construct
Cute girls are real’

A big theme of Chopra’s writing is the discovery of the ‘True Self’, which is ‘the greatest spiritual secret in the world’.

Here's a feature from a couple of years ago, saying Chopra’s idea of the ‘True Self’ is actually a tool of manipulation and marketing. Seems timely.

Deepak Chopra is a charlatan then? It doesn’t surprise me at all that other people also have that view.

Quelle surprise!

One thing I've been struck by on the MN Relationships thread is the number of women who complain that men who say they're 'spiritual' actually behave worse than other men. They're more selfish.

I've often felt that the so-called 'spirituality' of Chopra and similar writers is very me-centred. Maybe that's why it's so popular in our selfie culture!

When I read the horrible revelations about Chopra and Epstein, it confirmed my hunch about how amoral his kind of spirituality really is. Reading this article helped me think through the underlying issues.

He's been frequently accused of sexual harassment and abuse, as well as plagiarism and (hearsay) other kinds of fraud. He was sued for wrongful death by the wife of a man with leukaemia who had allegedly adopted Chopra's practices and later died. He is very litigious.

I was now in a full-blown relationship with Deepak. My status as a client at the Center had become a pretense ... he began discussing his marriage, explaining that he and his wife had an “understanding.” I immediately took this to mean there were other women—one only puts an “understanding” in place if something like this happens frequently. I believed him when he said his wife was okay with it, and I decided I could be too.

I am coming forward to speak for other young women who all too frequently find themselves in the position I found myself in with Dr. Chopra. This is an invitation for them to stand with me, just as previous accounts from other brave women have served as an invitation to me.

Don't Mess With Deepak

IN A LETTER TO THE NEW York Times last year, Deepak Chopra admitted to a dilemma. ""How does a public figure protect himself from slander without compromising his spiritual values?'' he asked.
