So 11.30am today 1st of January myself and my son were awake in bed. We heard the doorbell ring and got up to check , no one there, no car outside , nothing. My parents were in bed and heard it too. I do believe in superstitions and stuff but it’s making me anxious it means death is coming, no one close to us has died recently or is ill. Anyone else has this happen? It’s a old normal button type doorbell

I'm not sure why you'd immediately leap to "death is coming" rather than "someone rang the bell then walked/ran away". Which is more likely here?

anon990 · 01/01/2026 14:43

No I live in a really rural place no one was there. Pls I’m anxious in general this heightened it

Traditionally, it was hearing three knocks on the door that was a portent of death, so I'm sure you'll be fine.

On a more serious note, things can go wrong with the wiring in doorbells, causing them to ring when no one has pressed them. My old nan's used to go off now and again for years, and nothing bad ever happened.

anon990 · 01/01/2026 14:45

Ok thank you for that response

At the risk of sounding unkind, you’re overthinking this to a ridiculous degree. Why on earth would you jump immediately to thinking that death was ringing your doorbell? It’s far more likely to be an electrical fault than a harbinger of doom.

23Shadows · 01/01/2026 14:46

I'm sorry to hear about your anxiety.

Why "death is coming" though? Is that supposedly associated with phantom door bell ringing? Just trying to understand why you think that.

Iloveeverycat · 01/01/2026 14:47

Never heard of that before. Why a doorbell not everyone has one.

anon990 · 01/01/2026 14:47

Yeah my dad said when his grandad died the door did a few knocks that night before he passed. I’m sure ive heard different stories like that over the years too so that’s why I jumped to that

Agree. When you hear hooves think horses, not zebras.

There are lots of stories like that, yes, it's old folklore, but there are also lots of old folk tales about vampires and werewolves and all kinds of things that don't really exist. It's really not something you need to worry about.

Fingalscave · 01/01/2026 14:51

We had one that just randomly went off with nobody there and my SIL also had the same problem. It's probably more common than we'd think.

RescueMeFromThisSilliness · 01/01/2026 15:19

Our doorbell rings to tell us there's just been a power cut.

ParallelLimes · 01/01/2026 15:22

I've never had a doorbell but our fire alarm beeps when it's out of battery. Could your doorbell just need new batteries? If someone's going to die soon, Death's got better things to do than go round announcing it to their relatives.

CherryBlossom321 · 01/01/2026 15:26

This happened to my mum when my grandfather passed away. The doorbell rang in the middle of the night, my parents opened the door and there was no one there. Moments later the phone rang and it was the hospice letting us know he had passed. My mum thinks he was saying goodbye.

Having said that, I once had my doorbell ring at my previous house, opened it within three seconds and no one was there, there was nowhere for anyone to hide and couldn’t have run out of sight in the few seconds I took to answer. No one died. I just assumed it was one of those inexplicable odd things that happens occasionally.

I tend to think most things have a logical explanation, even if we can’t find it.

LonginesPrime · 01/01/2026 15:36

I would just assume it was a courier who rang then realised they had the wrong house.

If you’re quite remote, it seems likely they assumed the one house on that road they could see must be the one they were after, and then perhaps only checked the actual number/house name after ringing the bell, and then left.

Couriers are super quick to leave nowadays as they’re under so much pressure to deliver quickly, and I often find parcels on my doorstep with no-one around only seconds after they’ve knocked.

LamonicBibber1 · 01/01/2026 15:42

There was three knocks on my door on new year's Eve and I went to check, no one was there. I didn't know this is a "thing" and no one is dead :-)

anon990 · 01/01/2026 15:55

Sorry it was actually my dads friend who came back again and we had a laugh about it . So thankfully it’s nothing to do with superstitions lol

Ok thats good. Now stop letting anxiety be your excuse for being fearful. Challenge your anxious thoughts more. Bring your logical side online. Stop letting anxiety rule the roost.

Can I just say as I’ve noticed on a few threads I’ve posted about different things on here why people need to be harsh and rude? Like I said I was an anxious person and I take medication to reduce this. No one on here knows me or my story we shouldn’t this be a place of a kind comments or reassurance which I what I asked for not comments making me out to be mentally insane. Just chill , it’s an app and none of you actually know me. If you’ve nothing kind or actually helpful to say don’t bother comment

Nobody suggested you're mentally insane, just pointed out that your thoughts about this were not logical.

RudolphTheReindeer · 01/01/2026 18:32

I'm not sure the grim reaper bothers with doorbells

slughater · 06/01/2026 18:05

people aren't being nasty, they are trying to get you to think logically which in the end is the best way to tackle your anxiety
CBT is very helpful for this
another explanation I was going to suggest (although you now have the real explanation) is that if you're in bed and possibly dozing/drowsy you can easily have a little micro dream that you believe is real
always remember, the simplest explanation is probably the correct one, however, we also have a lot invested in believing (eg) our loved ones are watching over us/there is an after life etc etc so explanations that support these beliefs seem plausible to us
honestly, tackle the anxiety !
