Is a catholic bully guilty of sin?

Im being bullied by a catholic family, they attend church yet they do not follow the bible or commandments as otherwise they wouldn’t treat me the way they do. It makes me angry that they attend church and try to appear as good people but they then knowingly and willingly make my life miserable. Are they sinners who will be judged for their actions? Or does Jesus forgive all, meaning they’ll get away with their behaviour towards me?

I’m so sorry you’re going through this — it’s deeply painful when people claim faith yet hurt others. You’re right to feel anger; God sees every injustice and knows the pain you’re experiencing.

Yes, what they’re doing is sin, and the Bible is clear that God will hold everyone accountable: “God will bring every deed into judgment, including every hidden thing, whether good or evil” (Ecclesiastes 12:14). Jesus’ forgiveness is real, but it comes through repentance, not through continuing to harm others (1 John 1:9). So their actions aren’t excused — God’s justice is perfect, even if we don’t see it yet.

While you can’t control their choices, you can focus on your own heart: turning to Jesus, seeking peace, and responding with love rather than bitterness. “Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good” (Romans 12:21). Talking to someone you trust is essential, especially if there is a safeguarding angle or you need any sort of protection (and if you feel you cannot address it directly with the people in question - which would be the first step). A pastor, mentor, or Christian friend — can also help you process this pain, pray with you, and remind you of God’s goodness.

OP I call people who preach but don’t practice “god botherers” they are good at kissing the altar rails to be seen to be good but they are awful. They will be judged for their actions.

Thank you both for your reassurance. It’s such a shame people do this and hide behind Jesus name for protection regardless of their actions. God botherers is a fantastic name for them! I will remember this every time they do something.

OP I live in Ireland and while we have the absolute salt of the earth good people we have a fair percentage of catholic god botherers. They are not nice and not good people but they can rock themselves up on a Sunday in their finery and kiss the those altar rails. I have learned not to get bogged down by a persons religious affiliation but more are they a good person.

you could speak to your minister/priest/deacon etc.
equally check out other catholic churches. i do find that each parish tends to have a different flavor/attitude.

I am assuming that what you say is an accurate portrayal of what is going on as the other family you speak of are not here to put their opinions across and we are going by what you have written. They may feel that they are Christians and usually it is only God who will judge others and their faith who sees by their heart and actions. If they are judged to be sinners and not repentant then will be judged for that. If they are sorry and repent for that then Jesus should forgive. Jesus also said that we should forgive our enemies seven times seven.

It seems that things are difficult and I would say if you have not then speak to a minister in the church and perhaps they can speak to the family on your behalf or you could all meet together. I don’t know if there could be a misunderstanding.

Also, perhaps if you are not satisfied with then find a new church and if you feel very bullied you could report it to the police.

God is our ultimate judge (James 4:11). "Anyone who speaks against a brother or sister or judges them speaks against the law."

Jesus also asked us to forgive others and to work on the resolution of disputes so that God can forgive you ( Luke 6:27). If somebody wrongs you Jesus told us to forgive them seventy-seven times" (Matthew 18:21-22) so that God can forgive your sins through Jesus Christ.

I bloody hope so. I know one Catholic family who are absolute shockers - money grabbing, ghosting ‘friends’ the moment they’re of no monetary benefit to them any more, demanding payment for charity acts. They’re hideous people and hopefully will be held to account one day.

Made me think of this:

Matthew 6:5 (NIV):
"And when you pray, do not be like the hypocrites, for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the street corners to be seen by others. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward in full".

Just because they attend Church doesnt team they are actual practicing catholics/Christians

I remember posting that under a very cruel, pious, judgemental social media post by a ‘Christian tradwife’ and her going totally nuts.

How do they make your life miserable
Do they preach religion to you
Are you Catholic / attend the same church so have a connection to the priest

DrPrunesqualer · 01/01/2026 19:21

Ps
If you aren’t then suggest googling the sacrament of confession

ScrollingLeaves · 02/02/2026 00:32

How are you being bulllied? How are they in a position to bully you? Where does it happen? Are you under 18? Are you working for them by any chance?

Do you need help?

Paddy Kelly went to Mass he never missed a Sunday,
Paddy Kelly went to hell for what he did on Monday . . . . .

I'm really sorry you are being put through this by these people. Try not to let them poison your own relationship with god.
