Daughter seeing a “Ghost”

It’s all very strange, my Dd has done wild swimming for a number of years and last year swam a two mile lake for charity, this year she’s doing 2 1/2 mile and practices at different stretches of water.
Last year at this very deep unused reservoir used by many swimmers, she mentioned that in the blackness she could sometimes see something white which was distracting her, I said possibly the sun coming from behind a cloud.
Anyway nothing more said until yesterday and she laughingly told us she was being haunted.
She sees a “woman” all white floating slowly up from the depths towards her, also in one particular part of the water she becomes very disoriented and finds herself swimming in the wrong direction.
None of this happens at any of the other places she practises and she said the last time she felt scared.

Any ideas what’s going on and how we can stop it?

Is there a history of drownings in the place?

Screamingabdabz · 14/07/2025 16:49

It’s her imagination and possibly resonant frequency in a particular part of the reservoir. Perhaps stay away from that particular open water swim if it’s freaking her out?

RedRosesPinkLilies · 15/07/2025 06:26

sounds scary. For whatever reason

Thegreatestoftheseislove · 15/07/2025 08:12

Ah! The all white scary floaty woman rising from the deep of wild water swimming places - she's related to the Loch Ness monster dontcha know.

RentalWoesNotFun · 15/07/2025 08:19

Don’t think you can stop it. Just go elsewhere.

The spook could be warning her the same thing, ie it’s dangerous here go away.

I’d listen.

SunflowerLife · 15/07/2025 08:28

I believe in this sort of stuff for reasons which I won't go into here because people who think they know everything about the universe like to patronise. But if for some reason she's making it up or imagining it, that tells me there's something negative about swimming there that frightens her and she either wants to stop or go somewhere else.

Insertfootnote · 15/07/2025 08:31

Is it possible there are some chemicals there, or algae etc that are making her disoriented? It doesn't sound safe to swim there. Abandoned reservoirs are notoriously dangerous due to submerged pumping stations etc.

White Lady," a common type of female ghost, particularly in folklore and ghost stories. These legends frequently associate the White Lady with tragedy, loss, and unresolved grief, often involving a woman who died tragically, especially due to betrayal, unrequited love, or a violent death

I think it's nonsense (not your daughter's feelings but the ghost theory) why are all these paranormal sightings based on tropes such as 1. A white woman. 2. In white. Who decided white should be associated with the paranormal?

I think the PP had a point and there's maybe a more scientific reason. Could there be some sort of hallucinogenic spore or chemical in the water? Higher elevations of certain minerals? It's a disused pumping station after all.

Sometimes people get feelings like this from places high in radon gas (something I read on another thread a few years ago)

I think she should try and swim elsewhere

She could stop it immediately and permanently by not swimming there again.

Possibly arose when people were commonly buried in white shrouds.

@BadDinner well, bones are white, and things left in the sun bleach towards white. I had a plant that dessicated and the leaves turned almost completely white. The same to an old cactus.

Mist is white… and steam…and clouds - these things are physical yet you can’t really hold/touch them. And they have a weightless quality.

So I think yes it is logical: White indicates perhaps an absence of life, an abundance of light/energy and a lack of physical substance.

I guess you could come up with similar ideas about black (shadows, absence of light/energy, a colour that is largely absent in nature) and black is also a colour associated with the supernatural.

I’m a Christian and also a wild swimmer, mostly in the sea. In this situation I would go somewhere else to swim, personally.

There are certain areas near me which are popular swimming spots but I wouldn’t swim there as I don’t feel comfortable with the spiritual atmosphere in the place. If she’s feeling scared then why continue at that location?

If she reports sensing /seeing anything similar when she’s away from that place I would seek prayer ministry from Christians.

She practises at other stretches of water but has never experienced anything like this, she’s not religious at all and is in fact an atheist.
The reason I was hoping for some help or explanation is because this reservoir is the closest place for her to practise if she doesn’t have much time but if it carries on I guess she will stop going there.
It’s all very strange and odd….

She should swim elsewhere

Does she wear one of those floaty things that are attached to you??

Sounds like she's having some sort of low blood sugar episodes or something

She always wears a wet suit and a float and always has a watcher on the side, usually her Dh, occasionally me.
So she’s not there alone, I’ll talk to her about it again and show her these replies.
The resonant frequency sounds plausible as the water is sometimes quite choppy, so that could be disorienting and the low blood pressure.
