What is a 'Good News' bible?

DS (8) has been asked to bring a 'Good news' bible into school if he has one.

We have a bible (old one of mine) - is this likely to be very different?

What's the Good News one?

I think it's just the standard bible given out or bought. It's what I've always had. There are a lot of different bibles - yours amy include or exclude certain books. i'm sure til do fine though.

A 'modern', easy to read version of the Bible.

Here

OrmIrian · 23/05/2008 11:12

With simple drawings. Very much not the King James version.

UnquietDad · 23/05/2008 11:12

It's the Janet & John bible.

UD - lol!

Okay, so these answewrs are slightly more comprehensive than mine....

Marina · 23/05/2008 11:14

If yours was a school or Sunday School gift or prize it is almost certainly a Good News edition.
RSV is the probable alternative - again it is modern English but closer in style to the King James. Most middle of the road CofE parishes use RSV for the readings in services etc.

Mine is probably 30 years old

Not the beautiful language of the King James version.....

UnquietDad · 23/05/2008 11:23

As an atheist I probably can't comment, but I love the language of the King James version - in parts it's a great piece of literature. The Good News Bible is, um, not.

Blandmum · 23/05/2008 11:23

agree UD

Legacy · 23/05/2008 11:42

I don't even know what the King James version is

Legacy - its ye olde Bible with all the thees and thous.

here

Blandmum · 23/05/2008 11:50

legacy I bet next months money that you actualy 'know' lots of it, because so many of the phrases have seeped into common usage in the english language

KayHarker · 23/05/2008 11:54

It's also well-known in Christian circles for the style of face-less people drawings.

There's a cartoon of a couple of faceless linedrawing people sitting in a church service, and people around them whispering 'They're GNB readers, obviously'

Although not in the bible itself, you understand.

EachPeachPearMum · 23/05/2008 14:07

It's the 'happy clappy' version

onepieceoflollipop · 23/05/2008 14:10

Some people would argue that some of the more "modern" translations such as the GNB are perhaps not as accurate as the more traditional King James Version. IMO some of these versions also tend to "date" fairly quickly.

Some of the phrases in the GNB that were in common usage at the time now sound quite odd.

onepieceoflollipop · 23/05/2008 14:11

Legacy, if the children are all reading out loud together then it may cause a slight confusion if he has a different version. Check with the teacher perhaps? - I am sure that not everyone will have a Good News Bible lying round the house ready to take to school.

MaryBS · 23/05/2008 15:44

You can get a second hand one for about £3.50 (plus 2.75 postage) on Amazon. It would be easier for him if he had the same as they recommend

Legacy · 23/05/2008 16:26

Mary - Good idea!

OP posts:
KayHarker · 23/05/2008 16:34

oo, no, it's not the Happy clappy version - that's The Message
