I am interested in Buddhism, Kymbo, I wondered if they have a place a bit like a Christian Church and Sunday School, ie somewhere where you can go once a week as a family and learn more about it and chant etc. I have been to a few meetings before the children came along but now need something other than an evening meeting for adults. I couldn't find anything on your UK website, do you know any others?

Hi Elf,
Where do you live? There are a few 'Cultural Centres'. One in Taplow,Berkshire and two in London, where they have lots of things going on. But if you don't live near these places then there's usually someone in your area called a Chapter Leader who'll have all the info on what's going on in your area. Usually once a month there's 'Kosen Rufu Gongyo' which is basically where everyone in your area get together to do some chanting,it's usually on the first Sunday of every month, at about 10am(ish),where the children are more than welcome. Children are usually welcome at the monthly meetings too,but if they are being held in the evening, its not very practical is it? Luckly,my local meetings are at 4pm on a Sunday so I take the kids, but a lot of place's do Mid-Week evenings.
If you let me know what area you are in I'll ask my MIL who the Chapter leader is and CAT you the details.

I'm pleased I found this thread. I'm considering becoming a Buddhist, because I liked what I saw when I spent time working in Thailand. I'm not sure how practising Buddhism works in reality for a westerner, and what it entails. Can you fill me in? How has it changed your life?

I won't be able to post back for a couple of days, so don't think I'm ignoring the thread over the weekend.

Hi PG,

I have been practising the buddhism of Nichiren Daishonin for 9 years now and belong to a lay organisation called Soka Gakkai International. They have a web site which is: www.sgi-uk.org.

Its probably best if you look at the site first as its one huge area to discuss! Let me know what you think?

This practice is really grounded in daily life which was why i was initially attracted to it. I had tried meditating but found it too introspective for me. I wanted to really move my life forward and this practice is all about that!

We chant out loud Nam Myoho Renge Kyo. Which is the title of the Lotus Sutra the ultimate teaching of Shakyamuni Buddha. In this sutra he teaches that WE all have the qualities of the buddha inherently within us. Compassion, wisdom, courage etc. By chanting we are pulling out of ourselves this "buddha nature" which gives us the power to affect our own destiny and that of our environment.

There are no strict rules or regultaions type thing about lifestyle,This practice is about revealing the best, happiest us we can be exactly where we are now! and trying to create the greatest possible value in our daily lives be it in our families, work place and society.

phew is that enough for now? dont wont to bombard you, but i get really excited when some one asks me about this as even after 9 years i cant begin to tell you how great it has been.

PG i dont know where to start to tell how much my life has changed!! not in some magical, flaky way!! but in genuine experiences of change within my life, for example relationshps i thought could NEVER change have. I have to stop sometimes to see how far my life has come. I dont mean in a material sense but how much i feel i have developed as a human being. We could continue this via email if you prefer as iam concious of taking up whole thread!!!

look forward to your reply
