DH says a psalm is directly from the bible & that a hymn is written

I'm not sure - but won't argue with him without accurate info

Thanks

A psalm is from the Book of Psalms for sure.

A hymn can be any song of praise. Good evangelical ones will be pretty much straight from the bible too, but not necessarily from the book of Psalms.

Hymns also have something to do with the tune - there is the rhythm of the words (bad description but the technical one escapes me at the moment) and the tune which is separate. You can mix and match the words to the tunes, as long as the rhythm fits. FAQ will be able to explain properly.

With modern praise songs, the words and tunes are usually written as one, so no mixing and matching.

A hymn is a religious song. A psalm is one of the texts from the Book of Psalms.

It might be more accurate to say a hymn is a Christian song.
