As promised new thread now based on training over the next three years.

I'm quite old and you talk to me just fine! 😀

MrsTulip · 31/12/2024 19:05

So after a very busy Christmas Eve and the Christmas day service, I had a few days relaxing, had 3 services at St M's on the 29th (as usual) but now off until 6th January. Although started with a bit of a sniffle, praying it remains a sniffle.
Happy New Year to everyone xx

Well done for surviving your busy Christmas. Hooe the sniffle doesn't develop and you can put your feet up.now.
Happy new year!

Well done on your completing your first Christmas as an ordinand. (Borrowed from another poster:) May there be a worldwide outbreak of common sense, perspective and compassion in 2025. I hope 2025 brings you joy!

Definitely praying for more common sense, perspective, compassion, understanding and peace in our world this coming year. 🙏🙏

Sniffle remained a sniffle and I enjoyed a few days off between Christmas and new year, followed by a reading/study week as not much was happening in parish.
Got a residential this weekend (focus on pastoral care and listening skills) so looking forward to that and I have two assignments, one finished and one nearly finished due at noon on Thursday.

FuzzyPuffling · 17/01/2025 08:26

I like the sound if the pastoral care training. Can I send our Rector on it for a " refresher". (He's not even at stage 1!) Enjoy!

MrsTulip · 23/01/2025 11:12

Weekend was brilliant, I learnt loads ( hoping I can put some of it into practice when I go with supervisor to do a home visit next week). Assignments have both been submitted.
Nothing in the diary until this evening so I’ve got some down time.

Glad you had such a good weekend. Remind me please, how long is training?

It departs on which pathway you are on ( which varies depending on your diocese) I’m doing 3 years as I’m doing a BA as part of my training.
So for me it’s 3 years of theological college (mixed mode so 1 day of lectures, 2 days self study, 2 week days in parish placement, Sunday in placement and then a day off) , once I’m ordained I then go into phase two of training which is roughly a 3 year curacy, at the end that the bishop signs everything off and I will have my own parish/ parishes ( if all goes well)

I don't agree with this at all, we all need leading and teaching, and think you're being deliberately provocative and hurtful to Mrs Tulip, who is working hard to fulfil her vocation.

@mnhq, please reinstate my post which was deleted, as it it scripturally correct (please see my second post), for the sake of those wishing to learn

MrsTulip · 31/01/2025 08:15

So I didn’t see the original post but reading the responses I take it that someone doesn’t agree with training to be a priest.
Im not going to start a theological debate or argument as this thread wasn’t designed for that, it is purely an insight into what training looks like, which will hopefully help those in the discernment/ training process.

I don’t think MNHQ give a hoot whether a post is ‘scripturally correct’. You’d have to be a believer, and the kind who thinks Bible Bingo is some kind of ‘gotcha’, for that. I’m an atheist, but have found @MrsTulip ’s posts on her training interesting as I know very little about CofE pathways to ordination. And, at the very least, she will be listening to and supporting people in her job.

MrsTulip · 02/02/2025 19:38

Can't believe that next Sunday will mark the half way point of my first year of training, time goes so fast! This time last year I was waiting on a meeting with the diocese to see where I would be going for a short discernment placement.
Going to celebrate by going to preach at my best friends church (she's been ordained 10 years).

whatausername · 02/02/2025 20:26

Before you know it you'll be in phase two and guiding those who are junior in their journey😛

MrsTulip · 17/02/2025 10:53

Half term week this week so not in college and a light week placement wise so getting ahead with some assignment prep and the collective worship I will lead next week as well as a sermon for Ash Wednesday.
Also going as a family to a local nature place with my placement supervisor and his family, hope it stays dry!
Plus the next college residential weekend is at the beginning of March.

So it's all happening here this week. College Monday - assignment grades are in and I've passed both so I'm happy, yesterday was pastoral visiting, a meeting about my summer placement and sermon writing time. Today is coffee morning, a funeral (observing) at the crem, and preaching at the Ash Wednesday service. Thursday is a study day. Friday is day off, Saturday half day study day and half day sermon writing. Sunday I'm preaching at St M's but also lay deaconing the 8:30 and doing a craft activity at the 9:30 so a busy week!

OP posts:
FuzzyPuffling · 05/03/2025 16:01

Wow, busy! But very interesting.
Have a blessed Lent- and don't work yourself into a frazzle.

Training for the workload of clergy! I swear my rector never sleeps!

I'm surprised you are even in college, everyone I know who has trained in recent years does so whilst working. I considered it but stuck to church admin!

There's lots of factors to consider around training pathways when discerning a call to train for ordination.
I originally wanted to train around work but when I spoke to my boss the part time hours she was offering wouldn't have been suitable.

And just like that another term of learning sessions has been completed. Got the last session of the lent course tomorrow evening (next week we are getting together in the church hall to watch the film Jesus Christ Superstar at the suggestion of the church warden). 4 assignments to finish ( due mid may), the week long residential, my termly ministry portfolio to pull together (more or less done, just need one more reflection and the feedback forms once I've led the Good Friday service), my internal college report to complete and Holy Week and Easter services. I will be taking Easter Monday through to Wednesday off to re-charge

OP posts:
FuzzyPuffling · 02/04/2025 19:17

Wow! What a lot of work, and what a lot already done. Well done.
How are you feeling about it all?

Do you keep the same placement next year, or move around a bit? And do you get some time off in the summer?
