I'm CofE.. also Spiritualist.
I was confirmed CofE of my own choosing ( only one in family).
I go to Church when l choose to..
But one thing I've never done since l was 11 is eat meat on Good Friday.( I know some Catholics don't eat meat on every Friday)

I'm agnostic, formerly Catholic. I wouldn't eat meat on GF and even feel bad drinking alcohol. Illogical? Perhaps.

MyOtherCarisAVauxhallZafira · 28/03/2024 14:07

I'm agnostic we have fish on good Friday. Just tradition to me like turkey at Christmas

MumChp · 28/03/2024 14:09

We have fish or go vegetarian.

Notthatcatagain · 28/03/2024 14:10

Just knocked the sausages off the meal planner for tomorrow's tea and put salmon in its place. I'd forgotten that it's GF

MrsDanversGlidesAgain · 28/03/2024 14:10

Went to church schools my entire school career, haven't been to church for decades, so agnostic at best - and yet I still have this niggling feeling that anything but fish on Good Friday is wrong.

EndlesslyDistracted · 28/03/2024 14:11

CofE/Catholic heritage but not practising household, we don't avoid eating meat on Good Friday. I wasn't aware of the tradition growing up TBH so either my parents didn't avoid it either or they served up fish without saying why and I didn't realise.

I'm an atheist who grew up in a devoutly Catholic household in devoutly Catholic society. I don't eat meat ever, because I'm vegetarian, but I am meeting friends for tapas and wine tomorrow. No residual nods to tradition, even though I grew up with the 'Black Fast' on Good Friday -- one small meal and two collations, very basic food and not much of it, black tea or coffee.

stonedaisy · 28/03/2024 14:24

We don't do this. Its solely a nod to Christianity

LadyEloise1 · 28/03/2024 14:43

A La Carte Catholic here.
We don't go to Mass every Sunday.
I believe wholeheartedly in contraception and think the Catholic Church's position on it is utterly daft.
We don't eat meat on Good Friday or Ash Wednesday.
Fish and chips from the chipper - not quite in the spirit of Lent,! I know Smile
Or I do a prawns or salmon dish or on occasion we have fish fingers.

DeanElderberry · 28/03/2024 15:04

I don't eat meat on any Friday, and usually stick to lentils on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday, but I'm battling a cold and need a bit of extra protein so I'll do a courgette gratin with eggs and cheese.

I've been off booze and sweet stuff for Lent and am really looking forward to Sunday.

LifeExperience · 28/03/2024 15:08

I'm Roman Catholic. I don't eat meat on Ash Wednesday, Fridays in Lent or Good Friday.

And yet we did have hot cross buns! Still do.

Thegreatestoftheseislove · 28/03/2024 15:39

Every Friday is fish (and chip) day in this household.

3BellyProblem · 28/03/2024 15:43

We didn’t eat meat on Fridays growing up (Catholic), including Good Friday.

I don’t practice anymore so I eat what I like.

Hagbard · 28/03/2024 15:46

Yes, Fridays are for eating hot dogs

mitogoshi · 28/03/2024 15:48

I don't, it's tradition. But we eat fish 2-3 times a week anyway so not a big deal. I'm going to a fish restaurant tomorrow which isn't really in the spirit of Good Friday but have friends in town, going to church in the afternoon instead this year

RhinestoneCowgirl · 28/03/2024 15:57

I'm am atheist but I do enjoy rituals and routines.

I'll be making a fish pie tomorrow, and baking hot cross buns.

Dacadactyl · 28/03/2024 15:58

We also don't eat meat on Friday.

Which fish do you recommend? Is salmon ok?

Dover sole was suggested but it’s £44 per kg on Ocado and last time I ate it I just ate the fine bones because I didn’t want to waste it.

Elephantsareace · 28/03/2024 16:50

Atheist here
I know Catholics eat fish on Fridays but I wasn't aware other Christians may avoid it on Good Friday.

Can I ask a probably silly question? Why is it called 'Good' Friday?

soupmaker · 28/03/2024 16:54

I'm a militant atheist. Still, it's fish on a Friday and absolutely no way would I eat any meat, not even a bacon roll, on GF!

Favouritefruits · 28/03/2024 16:57

I’m not religious at all but always have fish on Good Friday! It definitely stems from my parents from when I was younger. My friend who is married to a CofE vicar still has meat on Good Friday, says it’s old fashioned which I think is strange!

DeanElderberry · 28/03/2024 17:22

afaik 'Good' in Good Friday is Godly, Holy, a bit like the Bible being the 'Good Book. Not because it's such fun hearing about a man being tortured to death.

Can I ask why not?

nocoolnamesleft · 28/03/2024 22:06

Every hospital I've ever worked at, the canteen served fish on Fridays. Hardly a hardship!
