Book on Buddhism recommendations

Could anyone recommend me a starter book on Buddhism. I have no interest in attending any groups at this point but would like to read up on the basics and the teachings of Buddha. I recognise that it is a complex set of teachings with lots of interpretations but I would like to start with a fairly basic introduction.

I have been searching Amazon and other sites and a lot of reviews mention that the author has put their own interpretation the subject, and to be honest nothing has grabbed me. If anyone has any suggestions I would be very grateful.

I was in a meditation group for about 5 years until I moved house - it was a down to earth group - nothing overtly religious or ritualistic - very grounded in philosophy, outlook - suited me - came at a happy time in my life - I carry a few things around with me from that time. I bought a lot of books but very few really connected with me.

First page of CJB's book always stuck in my mind.

If you want a slightly lighter, easier read, try the Dalai Lama's Cat series - I think 4 books - enjoyable.

@larkstar @BookWorm45 Thank you both, I will look into all of these suggestions. As a chronic overthinker, I do believe that animals certainly do have a lot to teach us!

Thich Nhat Hahn has written loads of fantastic books but the how to series is a good place to start

How to love

How to sit

How to Eat

etc

I have also enjoyed reading books by Pema Chödrön but probably not the basic starter books that you mentioned in the OP

Thich Nhat Hahn, I was told by a Buddhist abbot, used to yell at his disciples...

Call of the Infinite: The Way of Shin Buddhism

Buddhism is much more diverse and multifaceted than man…
