What hymn am I thinking of?

I've just returned from a Catholic mass where I did not recognise a single hymn. Except the melody of one. Which is now earworming away in my head, with annoying fragments of lines. It's a CoE hymn:

Lord of all (something something something)
Thy angels adore thee, all (something something something)
Be there at our (something) and give us we pray,
(Something something something) at the end of the day.

(Or ...at the break of the day?)

Lord of all hopefulness, Lord of all joy,
whose trust, ever childlike, no cares could destroy:
Be there at our waking, and give us, we pray,
your bliss in our hearts, Lord, at the break of the day.

We sang it a lot at school!

It's Lord of all Hopefulness. According to Wikipedia these are the words:

Lord of all hopefulness, Lord of all joy,
whose trust, ever childlike, no cares could destroy,
be there at our waking, and give us, we pray,
your bliss in our hearts, Lord, at the break of the day.
Lord of all kindliness, Lord of all grace,
your hands swift to welcome, your arms to embrace,
be there at our homing, and give us, we pray,
your love in our hearts, Lord, at the eve of the day.

Oh my word that's a blast from the past!!!!

Now earworming me back to 1982!

Yes sounds like Lord of all Hopefulness.

The melody is called Slane and is also used for Be Thou My Vision. It may be used for others but I can’t think of any of the top of my head!

Dilbertian · 03/07/2023 22:25

Right back to school!

A good memory for once 😊

I got as far as "Lord of all hopefulness, lord of all joy. Who's something is something and som-m-thing else!"

GreeboIsMySpiritAnimal · 03/07/2023 22:52

It's been a good 30 years since I last went to Mass though!

Pattygonia · 03/07/2023 23:03

A lovely hymn!we had it at our wedding… ifalwsys makes me cry a little in a good way - I love t e way it takes you through the day as a metaphor for life

CurlewKate · 02/08/2023 14:23

I wouldn't have thought of it as a Catholic hymn, though.

CurlewKate · 02/08/2023 14:27

I can't remember who wrote it but she was an agnostic! And the tune is traditional like most of the best hymn tunes.

AppleDumplingWithCustard · 02/08/2023 14:41

Beautiful hymn. Be Thou My Vision is also sung to the same tune.

CurlewKate · 02/08/2023 17:20

How Great Thou Art is the one that makes me cry....

You’ve mashed up two hymns, there, OP. Most of what you have quoted is from Lord of All Hopefulness, as PPs have said. However, this line:

Thy angels adore thee, all (something something something)

is from the last verse of Immortal, Invisible - another lovely hymn.

So I did!

Both hymns bring memories flooding back. Haven't heard them in years. Totally associated with school assembly.

Jan Struther otherwise Joyce Anstruther and later Mrs Maxtone Graham, grandmother of writer Ysenda Maxtone Graham.

The tune - Slane - is Irish.

Isoqueen · 07/08/2023 12:07

We sing it at my church - a Presbyterian one. Also used to sing it at the Baptist church I used to go to. Crosses all denominations which is lovely.

Startyabastard · 25/09/2023 01:10

I feel nostalgia when I think of the religious hymns at school, but I think that's all it is for me.
I'm an atheist, so I think I'd say there's no need for God based songs.
