Eid question

Hello,

I do apologise if this is an insensitive question. I don't want to offend anyone in fact I want to do the exact opposite.

We would like to buy our friends children some presents for Eid and I was thinking of two dolls and a tea party set.

However my mum has said Muslims are not allowed to receive anything with eyes such as dolls, toys with eyes etc as it's associated with bad luck.

My mum isn't the most reliable source which is why I'm asking here ..

Is there any truth to this or is it okay to give them dolls and a teaset?

Thank you

Some Muslims- the very orthodox- stick to a very strict interpretation of the hadith (guidance on living your life by the prophet Muhammed) that states nothing resembling a living being with eyes should be recreated. Others don't because there is an exemption to the rule when it comes to toys and children's development.

I've never heard that. I used to sell toys and the baby dolls were a big seller around Eid.

Ps. What a lovely gesture. I'm sure the children and their parents will really appreciate it.

Thank you @mightymam.

Is it better just to ask them? I wanted to avoid it as they are so kind they'd tell me not to get anything and not to be silly etc but I would like to get them something haha

If you want it left a surprise, there's no need to warn them beforehand! I wouldn't :)

I hope not as my daughters best friend is celebrating Eid and I got her a polly pocket! They are so nice, I'm sure they wouldn't tell me otherwise but they are quite strict - not celebrating birthdays for example. I'm a bit worried now.

Our neighbours removed the door knocker when they moved in due to this reason - it was an animal head and they couldn't have a replication of a living being, sonit may be something they do observe - the tea set sounds fab - in place of dolls what about drawing book and sparkly gel pens or something along those ones?

My mum used send flowers and schloer round to celebrate!

I ended up asking them and they said they remove the toys when they are praying so it's okay to get them (might be the same for anyone else gifting!)
