Hindu traditions

Hi,

A family member is Hindu, not in the UK or in India. The seem quite extreme to me (I am an atheist, grandparents are Christian). For instance they say they can’t choose their wedding date, a Hindu priest has to choose it for them. Is this normal for Hindus in the UK and India?

In addition, their son was going to be baptised (not sure that’s what it’s called in the Hindu religion). However, the son’s great grandmother had just died and they have to respect a one year, one day mourning, which means they have to cancel the baptism at short notice. Same question: is this what is usually done?

In case anyone wonders why I am posting these questions, all these traditions seem extreme to me, but as I am not Hindu, I am wondering if a modern a Hindu person would think they are normal or extreme. Thank you!

Hopeful bump?

I’m not Hindu but have Hindu friends. Their wedding date was set by an astrologer to be the most auspicious for the future so that doesn’t surprise me.

Like with any religion, there is a massive range in the way people follow. No more or less 'extreme' than any other faith.

Not sure how your second example is extreme? My friend is Serbian Orthodox and they cancelled a wedding as her father in law (much loved) died and they had to observe a year's mourning

Yep. It's a bit traditional but not extreme. Hinduism is full of these traditions and customs. All will be completely normal to us Hindus but a bit nuts to those looking in.

That’s useful to know, thank you.

Normal in my experience. Though obviously, all Hindus will practise their faith differently.
