Help, my 3 year old insists on saying grace in Mc Donnalds !!!

Our Daughter is nearly 3 and goes to a christien pre-school. She has started to say grace at the dinner table, as this is done at school. We thought it was really sweet and have kept it up. Every time we sit down to eat now, she makes us put our hands together while she sais her own version of grace.
The problem is, as I found out to my embarrasment. She wanted to say it in Mac Donnalds and wanted me to do it too. She really insisted on doing it. How do I explain that people don't usually pray before their happy meal??
I don't want her to feel as it's wrong for her to pray or somthing to feel embarraced about. What should I do??

Lulumama · 13/02/2008 15:07

not go to macdonalds anymore? or get a drive through meal

Marne · 13/02/2008 15:08

lol, i would just go along with it, i don't see a problem.

purpleturtle · 13/02/2008 15:10

If you don't want her to feel embarrassed about praying, then you need to not be embarrassed about praying.

We usually say grace at home, and will often say a very quick, 'Thank you for our food' when we're out - no hands together eyes closed palaver. God hears all anyway. Perhaps you could explore a less 'obvious' way for her to say grace for when you're out?

mummyloveslucy · 13/02/2008 15:18

Thanks everyone, purpleturtle- that's a good idea. I'm not embarrassed about praying, only in public when she insists on the hands together eyes closed sort. (I think it's lovely when she does it in church, but not everyone shares our views.

ahhh bless her

purpleturtle · 13/02/2008 15:21

Just be grateful she doesn't want to sing grace. Loudly .

mummyloveslucy · 13/02/2008 15:26

True!

That's so sweet!

MaryBS · 13/02/2008 21:28

I think its lovely! I'm sure it draws smiles from others too. My DD loves singing the grace (to the tune of 10 green bottles), but not in MacD's:

Thank you father for all the things you give
Thank you father for all we need to live
May we share with others all we need to know
I want to thank you father, everywhere we go

And then if she feels like it, she and DS do a duet (to a diff tune):

Amen Amen Amen
Forever (forever)
and ever (and ever)
Forever let the people sing Amen
Amen

By which time the food has gone cold

mummyloveslucy · 13/02/2008 22:24

MaryBS - I think that this may be a taste of things to come! Your two sound lovely. I would deffinatly smile if I heard them.

We say a prayer before meals when we're out and about - be it MacDonalds, a Boots sandwich or Tesco. It's not so bad

PandaG · 14/02/2008 13:27

we sometimes do sung graces with actions at home with the DC (not in MacD's!!) although do generally do a quiet 'thanks for our food and this time together amen' in a restaurant.

favourite graces at home include, to the tune of Superman

thank you Lord for giving us food (one arm in air)
thank you Lord, for giving us food (both arms in air together)
our daily bre-ead
the things you sai---d (arms together in air swaying like superman flying!)
thank you Lord, for giving us food.

or to the tune of the Addams Family

der der der der (bang bang -on the table) x2
der der der der, der der der der, der der der der (bang bang)

lord we are so grateful, for every cup and plateful
we thank you that you're faithful and we'rre in your family
der der der der etc.

DC love it !

Although, I should say that our graces aren't mini west-end musical productions like some of the suggestions . We just say 'father God, we thank you for this food, and all your blessings to us. Please bless those who don't have enough today, in Jesus name amen.'

Though, I grant you, we could make it more exciting with some imaginative costumes

mummyloveslucy · 14/02/2008 18:27

Thanks everyone for the brilliant and wacky grace options. We will definatly be trying some of them out. But not in MD's.
We may still do a simple, subtle grace with her when out. Depends how brave we feel!

Saying grace before meals used to be the 'norm' a number of years ago. It is sad now that in this godless society today, people have forgotten about the Lord Jesus who looks after us from day to day with our food, clothing, homes. family, etc. We have souls- give thanks to Him who has created us. It is lovely to hear of a little lass who wants to do just that- don't discourage her. Who cares what others think- it might teach others a thing or do!

Nothing practcal to add, I just wanted to say that I think the title of your thread deserves an award

Love it

mummyloveslucy · 17/02/2008 18:20

Thanks everyone, I am proud of my little cherub. I want her to continue doing what she believes to be right and good. It would be awful if she was put off by what people might think.

Nothing to add either really except I think it sounds lovely too
