Advice about pilgrimage

For a few years I've wanted to do a pilgrimage. I was bought up in an evangelical church and occasionally go to mass at my local Catholic church. I'm finding my beliefs a bit distant. But I'd love to do a pilgrimage. I'm not sure where to somewhere in the UK would be fine. I'd be on my own so would prefer to be part of an organised group. Has anyone got any experience?

I've always wanted to do this northerncross.co.uk/

I go to Lourdes every year, used to my with my home diocese. But have jumped ship to my friends diocese and a larger pilgrimage. I love it!

British Pilgrimage Trust is brilliant.

Look at North Star Travel

I'm about to go to Rome through them with my parish but I know the owner runs a range of pilgrimages to different places where anyone can join.

Or Joe Walsh or Tangney tours.

McCabe Pilgrimages are pretty good, though they’re definitely not the cheaper end of the market.

Thank you. I'll look at all these options

Me too! Same background and experience as you, so am watching this with interest. A vicar I follow on Twitter is organising one to the Holy Land next year, having done it with McCabe

Reporting in from Rome as I am on a pilgrimage this week with our local parish. It's been an amazing experience so far and even better than I thought it would be. We were blessed with seats very near the front for the Popes audience this morning!

I would urge anyone on the fence to go and do it! Life is for living!

I’ve just look at the tours suggested. I never realised they would be so expensive & as I’d be going alone I’d have to pay an extra £779 for a single supplement.

however I would love to do it so it looks like it’s time to start saving up. McCabe yours look fantastic.

Toddlerteaplease · 25/04/2023 23:42

The single supplements are huge
. For several years I travelled independently of our diocesan pilgrimage and. Booked direct with the hotel. (Lourdes) They didn't charge a supplement. As a helper, I get a heavily subsidised rate this year.

The most famous Catholic Shrine in England is in Norfolk at Walsingham, it’s an ancient shrine almost 1,000 years old that was visited by Kings and Queens and pilgrim as from all the country and Europe. Henry VIII himself visited and had a great devotion to Our Lady Of Walsingham for decades until his turnaround at the Reformation and the shrine and Augustinian Priory and Franciscan Friary were destroyed.

During the 300+ years of Catholic persecution and the loss of Catholic civil rites it was illegal to visit Walsingham and it disappeared from history and became a sleepy village.

The devotion was revived in the late 19th century and now there are Catholic and Anglican shrines the village and the Russian Orthodox also have a church. The Catholics have a full schedule of pilgrimages and events all year which you can easily find out about. Pope Francis recently declared Walsingham a Basilica. Some of the Pilgrimages are huge, the Tamil annual pilgrimage is famous for shutting down the local area because of the tens of thousands that come. There are also youth events, family events, big events on significant Catholic feast days etc.

I would suggest you reach out to the Catholic Community of Our Lady of Walsingham who live in the area and will be able to help you discern what kind of experience you are hoping for. You can visit Walsingham as a day trip but many have a mini retreat of a weekend or a week. It’s a very beautiful place.

The Community of Our Lady of Walsingham

We are a new religious community of sisters and brothers (some of whom will be priests). We help promote a culture of vocation in the Church and in society by enabling people to respond fully to the call of love in their lives.

I think the community of Our lady of walsingham no longer live there. Always thought there was something a bit odd about them.
