Disappointed after 1-2-1 with a locally recommended medium

A couple of days ago I had a 1-2-1 with a locally recommended medium. It was a private reading, lasting approx an hour.
She gets amazing reviews locally in the village, also on her website and local FB groups. Several of my friends and colleagues have also recommended her so I thought I'd give it a try.
Paid £50 for the hour.
At the start of the session she asked if there were any particular deceased loved one I'd like to hear from... Not wanting to "feed" her any information I said no, just that I'd be interested to see who comes across. There were some I wanted to hear from but obviously didn't want to give her the details.
Several things she got wrong:
Things about my grandad's physical appearance and age when he died. I mean HUGE differences.
Said I didn't have any children (I do!)
Said I don't enjoy driving... Again, I do!
Said I'm a huge animal lover, I'm not a particular fan. Nothing against them though.
Medium felt I was a "cat" woman and had lots of cats... Never had one in my life!
Asked what kind of voluntary work I'm involved in? - None, never done any!
Only one of the names she mentioned to were an actual relative, others I'd never heard of.
Only aspect of the reading I found really accurate was the mention about my last relationship, she talked about the problems and what happened... Spot on and very specific.
As this medium was so well recommended I really had been excited about going for a reading but came away a little disappointed. Does this happen to other people?

I’m sorry, but it’ll be because it’s all made up. Please don’t put hope or trust in these people. Think about and honour your loved ones but don’t look for messages beyond the grave.

SlipperyLizard · 16/03/2023 12:13

No one is psychic/can talk to “the other side” - her cold reading skills just let her down that day.

You've been taken for a complete mug along with everybody else that uses these charlatans

NotAnotherBathBomb · 16/03/2023 12:37

Oh dear. An expensive lesson to learn. Please don't fall for this again.

PuppyMonkey · 16/03/2023 12:52

I’ve never been to a medium but I should imagine yes it happens to lots of other people.Grin

This. I mean honestly, what did you expect???

AnorLondo · 16/03/2023 14:10

You were conned. Live and learn.

And FWIW OP, I've been to one too, with a friend. My friend believes, I don't. For me it was a bit of fun. I couldn't even say that the woman got stuff wrong, she was way too vague. I think I paid £40, but went knowing that I wasn't going to get anything useful. I'll stick to cheaper tarot card readings in future if I fancy another go.

OP, if that lady could genuinely communicate with the dead, she wouldn’t be doing it in your village for £50 a pop!
She’d be on national tv, speaking to the likes of Princess Diana for William and Harry, for megabucks. You need to be a bit less credulous, you are being taken for a sucker by a scammer.

cocksstrideintheevening · 16/03/2023 14:26

FML. What did you expect?!

VirginiaQ · 16/03/2023 15:02

It's really all rubbish!

I went along with a friend once as a total non believer but decided to give it a whirl. Started describing an elderly gentleman who was 'coming through'. You don't need to be Sherlock Holmes to think someone of my age age wouldn't have a dead grandad!

Anyway he starts giving me loads of details about how he loved to go walking, (yes) and how he loved walking in the moors local to us (no). I let him carry as he was clearly making it up and trying to read me for my reactions. Unfortunately for him my grandad was French, loved to walk in the Alps, spoke French with little English and had never visited the locality I now loved. Total charlatan although I had been assured by my friend that he had a good reputation.

It's all bollocks. Good ones are very skilled, not at communicating with the dead but at cold readings and possibly research, - if names are taken at time of reservations.

The majority of people paying to see a medium have lost someone, so they are off to a flying start.

My family were involved with Magic (performance - Magic Circle) and we knew a couple of mentalists, as they used to be known. It is a skill. Look at Derren Brown, he doesn't profess any supernatural abilities, it is all suggestion, questioning techniques, reading of physical responses and clues. Someone like my mum would be manna from heaven, she was so expressive and eager to please, she'd have volunteered who might be coming through as soon as the medium ventured "I've got a man here for you..."

IDontWantToBeAPie · 16/03/2023 17:21

She's a crook.

Romance issues and pasta are the easiest things to fake as most relationships have a few of maybe 6 major flaws.

RoseslnTheHospital · 16/03/2023 17:23

£50 an hour! Wow. They are scam artists preying on vulnerable people.

GettingThereCharleyBear · 16/03/2023 17:26

They are appalling people. Total con artists but cruel con artists who prey on people at their most vulnerable.

I don’t understand how you could have expected anything else? 😢

I once went to a "medium event" at a local spiritualist church out of curiosity. Medium was introduced with many praises, how great and accurate she always was, etc. I got a bad vibe right from the start, her style was very over the top. She was a performer too, singing and dancing happily, as she claimed the dead relatives came to her with songs and dances!
She did have a few "spot on" readings from the crowd, but also plenty of incorrect ones. I am suspicious that the spot-ons might have been planted there or friends of hers. I don't know but the event lasted nearly 2 hours and this was a "professional medium", with a website and recommended by that church too. Lucky I only paid a fiver!
I also got conned once into some "Light language" BS. The medium/reader did not get anything right, left me with a negative feeling, all for £25. Never paying for this kind of tosh again.
Having said that, I do believe there are genuine psychics, but they are extremely rare, and you won't see them performing on stage or listing their services on FB.
