C of e sacraments

Hi all

my DD didn’t get first choice of a catholic school (we are baptised catholics, however not so much practising catholics, we don’t really go to church unless a special mass, christmas etc) so I sent her to the next school I was offered which happened to be c of e.

i am happy for her to follow a Christian way of life, as catholics are Christian’s and im also happy to attend the schools church on special occasions I.e Easter Christmas etc.

do c of e make any sacraments? Catholics make 7 sacraments, do c of e make the same sacraments or is it all different?

i am thinking of staying in line with c of e and not taking further steps to do communion etc etc. husband is a complete atheist and doesn’t believe in any of it. For me personally, baptism was the only important sacrament I wanted - for obvious reasons.

thanks
Marl x

The C of E have two sacraments: baptism, and communion.

If your daughter is baptised Catholic, she will always have the option of coming to Catholic sacraments later - although if she's religious, it may make things interesting re valid marriages (baptised Catholics can only licitly marry in a Catholic ceremony unless they have a dispensation, for example - that's how Boris got married for the THIRD time in a Catholic cathedral).

The CofE is a broad reformed church. There are two agreed sacraments although my husband a CofE priest considers there should be more- like ordination, marriage and the last rites. The Eucharist may be referred to as communion, Eucharist or even Mass depending on the individual churches churchmanship. Some will even have the bells and incense although not the monstrance. Some will seem too laidback. There is a set of six approved liturgies for the actual consecration of bread and wine. These prayers are set and should be used. This has the approval of the College of Liturgists. You can access the liturgy for holy communion via the main CofE website for free. The rest of the service may be more flexible reflecting the needs of the congregation and style of worship. Some use formal choirs, some use hymns and some praise songs. Some offer a mix recognising the various needs to help them enter into worship of God within a single congregation. Canon law requires at least one Eucharist per week but gives some wiggle room for parishes without a priest. The best thing to do is chat to the priest in charge of the church that is associated with the church school. Its a bit busy with advent so you MIGHT not get a response till after Christmas Day but I can assure you most CofE priests will be happy to answer your questions.

Get in touch with your local RC parish if you want her to receive The sacraments. Many will have separate classes, for the children who don't go to catholic schools.

As @triballeader says the C of E is a broad church. What you would not expect is children at a C of E school being prepared for first holy communion. Historically, children have been confirmed around 12-14 and not at primary school as seems to be the norm in RC schools. Cof E schools will follow the local SACRE curriculum for RE and that will cover other world religions as well as Christianity.

If you want early admission to holy communion your best bet is the local RC church. Otherwise talk to your CofE parish priest who may be delighted to admit them to communion prior to confirmation if that is in place or look at you in horror as the Eucharist is something they have parked in the early morning service so it doesn't get in the way of the praise band.

Broad church.
