How long did it take you? How many chapters did you read each day?

I just finished the book of Genesis yesterday. I started on Jan 1 and would like to finish this year.

I have, I did it as a (rather odd) child

I was talking to a Mormon in the street once and mentioned that I had read the whole bible - he seemed slightly intimidated

Me, as a child too. Had to do RE for O level/GCSE (had to study in detail the holy gospel according to Mark but had read it all by then anyway).

Have also read the whole Book of Common Prayer after years sat in the pews as a choir girl.

I did as a teenager, but can't remember how long it took tbh. I vaguely recall cheating a bit and skipping the who begat who bits. I read it because I couldn't decide whether I believed in god or not, and it helped me get my thoughts together

I started in sep 06 and am only up to leviticus . i take broad notes along the way to keep my interest up, not very good at just reading something. I was going to aim for a couple of chapters a day, but hasn't really happened. Must persevere.

I have not done it. But I would like to. One day I will do something like this:

here

Basically it is a plan produced by a 19th C clergyman for reading the Bible in a year, at the rate of four chapters a day. Still used by lots of Christians today.

All the best!

I have read the new testiment 3-4 times. Like Franny, I was an odd child . When I was given the gideon bible I took them at their word and read a chapter a day. I stated at the begining. I even did the 'begats. It was the last thing I did every night before going to sleep.

Then I discovered boys and drink!

ruthmollymummy · 18/01/2008 20:35

I've read it twice from beginning to end but much prefer the new testament (I hope there's no eternal consequence of saying that!) so i've read that many more times. (p.s. frannyandzooie I'm a Mormon!)

My dh and I did it years ago, using CWR's 'Through the Bible in a year' notes. We didn't do it quite in a year. It starts with Genesis and then moves to Job. We used to read it so that one of us did Job and the other the 'comforters' That's how we started calling it 'doing an argument' and we still call it that when we do our daily Bilble readings.

yogabird · 18/01/2008 22:05

me too, but only the New. i did the gideon thing as a child and then again a few years ago (probably more than 10 years ago actually, doesn't time fly?)

MaryBS · 19/01/2008 11:38

I'm another odd person who read the entire bible as a child.

savedbygrace · 20/01/2008 21:51

they reckon 4 chpters a day will get you through whole thing in a year

(I've read NT several times and am up to Jermiah in the OT)

I'm a Norse Tradition Pagan, and I read the Bible through a couple of years ago because I like ancient texts and wanted to see what it was really all about. It took me about 6 months reading a little bit each night (always have about 3 books on the go and read a bit of each). Found it fascinating - just the fact that at school I was taught such a tiny fraction of the whole. Helped me get closure on a lot of religious doubting hanging over from my teens too.

Roseylea · 30/01/2008 17:41

I read through the whole Bible while I was at university (out of choce, of wanting to learn more about my faith).

I learnt that there are some cracking obscure bits in the OT, there are some odd but compelling bits, there are some bits you have to handle carefully, there is the most beautiful poetry (and I'd love to learn biblical Hebrew in order to really appreciate the beauty of the Psalms) and there is so much wisdom and so many truly wonderful bits that to talk about 'my favourite verse' is a nonsense. I learnt New Testament Greek at university, and I still love delving into the Greek to steer me through some of the more puzzling passages.

I read a chapter of the Bible every morning (at 6 a.m. - eeek!) and I am constantly amazed to find new stuff in there, or maybe new perpectives, answers to current issues and to fresh questions in my mind. I also read a passage of the Beginners' Bible to my dc every morning, and I really enjoy this as well as it helps me to see the stories through a child's eyes, as if I am readung them myself for the first time again.

I've been reading the Bible regularly like this since I was 13 and there is still more to discover! I guess it's a bit like marriage really; you can be happily married to someone for life and yet never stop learning new things about them as you go through life together, each new situation revealing new perpectives on your partner.

Maybe I'll embark on another Genesis - Revelation straight-through read, but I really enjoy hopping around and 'following my interests' in the Bible.

MaryBS · 30/01/2008 18:41

I have to admit, the version I have now (NRSV) is infinitely more readable than the one I read as a child (Douai version).
