Catholic: Spiritual practices for "ordinary" Christians

This is a very short free course offered by the Lay Mission Project which forms Catholics in discipleship. It is led by Fr. Michael Sweeney a Catholic Dominican Priest. The Dominicans are an Order (community) of priests like the Franciscans. They follow the teaching of a spiritual master, St. Dominic and have been formed using this spirituality for 800+ years.

These are two very simple spiritual practices that anyone can do, no need to be Catholic.

  1. The first is a very short recollection/reflection on your day and seeing as Jesus sees.
  1. The second is Lectio Divina
The term roughly translates to "divine reading." Lectio Divina is not meant as an intellectual study of the Bible, but as a means of communion with God.

In the daily Catholic Mass across the world the same scripture readings are read. So its easy to find the daily Gospel reading, which are the words of Jesus. You can look the Gospel reading of the day up online. You don't need a bible. Here is the website of the Bishops of the USA with access to the daily reading.

Both practices are very simple and accessible. For change in your life and encounter with God however you need to make these simple spiritual practices habits, doing them once or twice as Fr. Sweeney says will make no difference.

I hope this encourages you.

P.S. Catholics listen/read scripture from the Old and New Testament and a Psalm every day, so the Gospel will be the last reading and you may need to page down past the other scripture readings to find it.

One of the things I love about the Catholic Church is the readings are the same everywhere. (Apart from
Country/ diocese specific feasts) my parents are C of E and I find their variable readings confusing.
Their is often a lovely reading/ meditation or homily in the office if readings each day as well. My favourite is the Letter of St Thomas Moore to his daughter, that's read on his feast.

Thanks, this looks perfect for me actually! Yay for Lectio Divino, this strikes me as such a spiritually and psychologically healthy practice. Something I would personally like to explore more.
@Toddlerteaplease I'm also a fan of the liturgical calendar and the readings being the same everywhere. The variable readings in the CofE feel quite discombobulating at times.
