What do you use for Bible study?

I'm working my way through the "Bible in One Year: A commentary" by Nicky Gumbel (of the Alpha course). I like it, it has a reading each day from each of a) the Proverbs/Psalms, 2) the New Testament; 3) The Old Testament. Just hoping I can keep it up as this is at least the 3rd time I've tried to do this!

What do you use? By yourself or in church groups? I'm of the Baptist persuasion, if that's relevant.

I have tried and failed with so many study guides. I often find the questions too comprehension based e.g.
"How did Jesus respond when the Centurion asked for help?"
or else just too obvious e.g. "How should we respond when people ask for our help".

I have found Tom Wright's "For Everyone" series very good, mind, although I'd recommend the accompanying commentary too as the questions can be meaty and the commentary will usually have the "answers" in it. Only used them in a group context though rather than for personal reflection.

Personally, I have recently found a Christian book on a subject I'm interested in more engaging than a set study guide. This started with Pete Greig's "How To Pray" book but has gone to:
Children's Spirituality by Rebecca Nye (I work in Early Years),
The Other Half of Church by Jim Wilder and Michael Hendricks (Christianity and Neuroscience)
Women Remembered by Joan Taylor and Helen Bond ( About Jesus' female disciples)
and Growing in the Prophetic by Mike Bickle.

I have found these books have inspired me to read more of the Bible and actually absorb it's context and meaning and to go and look at other resources such as documentaries or online teaching more than another look at a parable I already know backwards.

I also listen to a lot of podcasts in the car as "Bible study" too. Ask NT Wright anything is fabulous but I also enjoy Unbelievable by Justin Brierly.

I like Jeff Lucas’s bible reading notes. I find them very helpful.

The Upper Room

I buy second hand copies. I think though it is issued three issues a year.

My husband uses Bible in One Year and likes it too. I personally just read the bible (choose a book by whatever mood I'm in) and read through it, writing notes as I go, and using the internet (websites like BibleGateway and others) to research each verse. Well, some don't need much research but others I need to research the meaning or the historical context or different opinions about some ideas etc. I just understand things better by reading and writing them down, whereas my husband prefers audio/visual learning.

At our church we also have a group that watches and discusses David Pawson's lectures, they can be really helpful and interesting! You can find his videos here, in case you've not come across them before: www.davidpawson.org/

If anyone wants to set up an online bible study group, I'd be keen! Message me if you fancy it 😊

Thanks everyone!
@Ouchmytoe100 good idea re setting up an online bible study group. How would we do it? A thread on here? Would we all follow the same programme?

I'm looking into Daily Bread, published by the Scripture Union of Eng & Wales. I'm sure I used to get 2nd hand copies of these when I was a teen!

Let's do the group.

I have an NIV Study Bible. It has lots of notes, which mean you can see the background or more info for each verse, so don't need to look them up online.

Ooh, I’d be down for a group too! I must admit I don’t really ‘understand’ the bible. My church doesn’t have reading groups or any groups in general. Online would be great!

Whatmeagain · 11/01/2023 23:05

I’d be up for a group as well - I do go to one through our church which is great but I’d love to join another as well. I did the Nicky Gumbell bible in a year last year and it was good but I felt I didn’t have time to actually think about what I was reading and it became a bit of a “job” rather than getting me closer to Him. This year I’m doing Daily Bread on a morning and just generally reading what I fancy on a night

Sausagenbacon · 12/01/2023 08:01

I like the idea of a group as well.
I find the BibleProject podcasts very good at overall coverage of different books. If I have specific questions I just Google them.

cheapskatemum · 12/01/2023 20:24

I use the YouVersion Bible app & choose different "plans". They're usually around 5 days long.

An excellent recommendation, he's a great guy. 😊
