Apologies if there's already a thread about this somewhere, I did look but I don't get along with the new search.

It took them long enough, although I know these things take time. Congratulations to those who can now get married in their Church. Hopefully the CofE south of the border will follow suit.

Great news. Looks like a sizeable majority voted for.

Christian Concern are crying about this on twitter. If they hate it it can only be a good thing.

Loads of the usual folk are all over the CoS Facebook page ranting about the church losing its way and turning it's back in God🙄
Thank goodness the GA passed this, it's not before time. I am really pleased and proud of them for a change.

Yeah well those kinds of people are becoming less and less common.

I'm 100% for gay marriage, don't get me wrong, but how do they justify this according to Christian teachings, which say homosexuality is a sin? (I'm not Christian - I'm just curious)

I'd imagine it's all about interpretation of scripture, same as with all the other pro-equality Christians and denominations around the world.

Its not actually that straightforward, the bible doesnt out and out say homosexuality is a sin its all based on translation and interpretation by humans over generations who have their own bias and prejudice

Besides its just people picking and choosing what they want to care about. Ive heard (bigots) people argue vehemently that gay people are all sinners without caring that they are wearing mixed fibres and people are interplanting their crops with a different species. I dont see people wearing tassels on their clothes and there is no outcry when people trim their beards. But these are all things that are exppressly commanded/forbidden in the bible. People just twist what they want to suit their agenda.

This is why its about time the church allowed gay marriage.

There is a fairly mainstream view that the law against men lying with men was introduced because, when the Hebrews left Egypt, there were actually not that many of them. If they hadn't stuck to heterosexual relationships there wouldn't have been enough babies born to keep their numbers up.
Same with early Christianity. In most places the nascent church was pretty tiny with a few house churches meeting in people's homes. Again, if enough kids weren't born, there would have been little chance of sustaining enough growth to spread the faith.
In the Gospels, there is nothing in the recorded words of Jesus that addresses homosexuality. So Christians mostly go on the writings of Paul on this matter and he was, obviously, writing to the very early, newly formed church structured as above.

Sparro, sadly, my session is full of them. It's embarrassing.

My understanding is that the original writjngs said a man should not lay with a child. However, this was amended/mistranslated.
Given the predilection for marrying off girls at early ages and the general narrative of the OT where women and girls are mostly there for servicing men (and apparently their own fathers in some examples), it is not surprising that a different narrative emerged.

Excellent news. Well done to the Church of Scotland, following the Methodist lead.
As you say, let us hope other Churches follow sooner rather than later.
