First Holy Communion angst--help

I'm hoping someone wise will be able to help.

We are Catholics, not brilliant ones, but attend more Sundays than not. My daughter is nine and would like to take FHC classes. Because in previous years they've always been held on Sundays we (and others) assumed this would be the case this year, so I signed her up.

At the parents' meeting we were told that they'd be held on Wednesdays, between 5 and 6. No consultation with parents because this was the only day the ladies running it could make (and I do understand their time constraints). Wednesdays are the day my daughter has the one activity that she adores more than any other: Brownies.

I asked the lady running it if we could be allowed to leave the hour-long class 15 minutes early so we'd only miss the first half hour of Brownies (ie, still get the last hour). She said yes. But this week she rang me up to say the priest has vetoed this concession and says she has to be there for the whole class.

My daughter wants to make her FHC but she is so sad at missing Brownies. She'd only get the last 45 minutes and would miss most of the work on badges.

I just don't know if I should leave FHC till next year (when she won't know as many children). Or make a second appeal. Or what.

I don't want to look as though I don't think FHC is very important.

I would let your daughter decide. And if she decides on Brownies then I would say to the priest that you don't think she is ready yet and because FHC is such a big decision you want to wait until she is a little older and understands it better.

How many classes does she have to attend for?

Bridie3 · 12/01/2008 16:24

Three a month until June, Avizandum (except hols. when there's no Brownies, either)--so she'd only make one Brownies a month until June. I think you're right about letting her have the final say, Morningpaper.

Can she take the classes at another RC church? I know she still won't know anyone but at least she'll be able to receive at the same time as her friends.

I wondered about that, MaryBS. The parish next to us has classes on Sat. morning. Do you think they'd let her have the classes there but take FHC at our parish church or would that not be the done thing? I don't want to offend anyone here!

Erm, by 'here', I meant our local church, not MN...

you'd think they would allow it - we took our classes at our school church but took our first Holy Communion at our parish church..I did my first confession in the school church- but who knows how the politics of parishes works these days - am terribly lapsed Catholic btw. I do remember it being a big deal for us and it should be up to your dd to decide which she wants to give the time to I think !

Its worth a go, see what your priest says first.

Bridie3 · 12/01/2008 21:50

Thank you, Marys!

We're still mulling it over.
