A Buddhist really wanting Christian answers

I'm considering sending my ds to a Christian infant/primary school and am worrying endlessly about it. I'm a Buddhist but this school is the best one in my catchment area (amongst other poorer performing Christian schools) so my concerns are that I really do not understand the concept of God and what ds will be taught about 'Him'.

As a Buddhist I appreciate the teachings of Jesus, sometimes referred to as a Boddhistva by buddhists; but what is God? I really was brought up to understand in that God was an omniscient male who created the world, an external kind of spiritual presence who understood everyone's deepest souls.

Do Christians currently think the universe is overviewed by this supernatural figure and is this taught to children? Or do Christians believe that God exists as a force within themselves only? Does anyone believe in Heaven, really?

I had a christian upbringing - it's cosy and nice but it's all bollocks..

EachPeachPearMum · 11/01/2008 02:14

There are actually plenty of scientists who believe in god yet believe Darwin's theories.

hedonia · 11/01/2008 02:14

we die and that's it I'm afraid//

hedonia · 11/01/2008 02:15

I konw but getting fewer and fewer - ther are too m any logical inconsistencies in religion..

EachPeachPearMum · 11/01/2008 02:16

Then I repeat- why are your children attending a faith school? Or are these the inconsistencies to which you refer?

singledadofthree · 11/01/2008 02:17

list a few from the New Testament, give your reasons, arguements etc - i'll have a look tomorrow. as for now, goodnight.

hedonia · 11/01/2008 02:18

god is all powerful and he created earth quakes

hedonia · 11/01/2008 02:19

cos it's a good school that all I care about..c o e is a nice benigh religion- that 's why we've all shok it off!

Pandemonium · 11/01/2008 02:19

Faith isn't about logic same as love isn't. It isn't really something you can be logical about.

I think Christianity, whether or not you believe in God, gives a moral code for us to live by. The fact that we don't do that is the reason for wars and religious conflict. A lot of things are done in the name of religion which have absolutely nothing to do with it. The fact that George Bush says it's God's will he attack Iraq doesn't mean to say that it is God's will. The man is quite patently a deluded fool and he does not thing but damage to the very thing he is supposed to believe in.

hedonia · 11/01/2008 02:20

and they do - that 's teh lovely thing - unlike most ther religions..it's free of dogma and gave us time to learn about other things anf ultimately see that it doesn't make sense¬

EachPeachPearMum · 11/01/2008 02:21

Not sure how that is an inconsistency? Surely if he created earthquakes, he'd have to be powerful?

hedonia · 11/01/2008 02:21

religion is the opiate of teh people..it's for poor people.

singledadofthree · 11/01/2008 02:21

arghh - you and earthquakes. there is the odd one in the Old Testament i recall. but the planet is alive, is recycles naturally - tectonic plates - it has to or it would cool and die. earthquakes are weaknesses where theres movement, we should learn not to live in these areas - as i said - the harder life is the better we get at it.

hedonia · 11/01/2008 02:22

yes exactly which means he created something horrible - why?

hedonia · 11/01/2008 02:23

so he didn'tcreat the universe then?? why worship him?

EachPeachPearMum · 11/01/2008 02:23

Well- where we are, you have to have attended regularly for years to get in, so it may not be an issue for you to choose this school anyway! Have you checked?

hedonia · 11/01/2008 02:23

you just can't explain it.that is the inconsistency..

EachPeachPearMum · 11/01/2008 02:25

I don't think earthquakes are horrible. I think they're amazing..... am a geographer

hedonia · 11/01/2008 02:25

god knows how we got in to c o e - they must be desperate wheb the catholics are queuing round the block to get into theirs!

hedonia · 11/01/2008 02:25

why do children die in earh quakes then?

singledadofthree · 11/01/2008 02:25

the planet isnt horrible - volcanoes kill people who live too close, one of the many things i still want to do is climb one - while its fairly quiet - and see its awesomeness - theyre cool!!

hedonia · 11/01/2008 02:26

cancer?

hedonia · 11/01/2008 02:26

he must be pretty mean and I like not worshipping him and beli9eving science

EachPeachPearMum · 11/01/2008 02:27

Who said what god has to conform to? Where are the rules of being a god? Haven't you read about any of the greek gods? They were jealous and petty, and angry, and cheeky, fun etc

The bible says 'god created man in his own image'- we are all those things, so why wouldn't god be those things too?

I am atheist though- but I have thought about this.
