I’m after a little bit of advice.
We got new neighbours a little before Christmas. They are a lovely family of Afghan refugees. I assume they are Muslim as the mother covers her hair.
At Christmas they sent us a lovely Christmas card.
I have bought Easter eggs for the children, however I have just learned that Easter Sunday is in Ramadan. All the children are young, with the oldest being 11.
Would it be acceptable to give them the Easter eggs given that it is Ramadan?

Thank you all.

Its fine, they can still eat chocolate after sunset.

Would it be seen as rude to give what might be seen as a Christian gift during Ramadan?

If they have given you a Christmas card I highly doubt they would be offended being given a chocolate egg 🥚 Ramadan or not. It's not like you're giving them alcohol or pork. What a nice way to start neighbourly relations.

AlwaysThinkingOfFood · 30/03/2022 19:10

No it wouldn't be rude at all. In fact, it's a very kind gesture, I'm sure the children will look forward to eating the chocolates!

PriamFarrl · 30/03/2022 21:20

Thank you all for your thoughts.

The Christmas card was so lovely as they had only just moved in. I’m sure the eggs will be well received, I just didn’t want to accidentally offend anyone.

I’m sure they’ll love it! Thank you for being kind x

I doubt it would cause offence but I'm not sure why you want to give them something for an event they don't celebrate. Surely an appropriate return for the Christmas card would be either a Ramadan treat or an Eid card? They acknowledged yours, so you should acknowledge theirs.

In fairness I don’t celebrate Easter either. I doubt many people who buy Easter eggs do. I saw it more as a sharing of culture really.

Are Eid cards a thing? I’d be happy to do that too.

Eid cards are a thing, but still get chocolate for the kids too!

longtimelurkerfirsttimeposter · 31/03/2022 07:56

Yes you can get Eid cards. Maybe a box of dates from your local supermarket, they'll all have them out now and would be gratefully received as that's traditionally what is eaten to break the fast.

PopsicleHustler · 02/04/2022 05:02

Get them different chocolate to Easter chocolate as Muslims dont do Easter. However I am Muslim but I dont eat actual Easter eggs. FWIW I Do eat mini eggs and Cadbury creme eggs lol. But you can buy other types of chocolate and also I second dates too as someone suggested above. A lot of muslims break their fast with dates and water so a nice pack of dates will go down well.

MoFro · 02/04/2022 05:11

Lovely gesture and very sweet of you to check, honestly, I’m sure the kids will be over the moon with chocolate. Muslims eat Easter eggs too - they are not really a symbol of anything religious, just because they’re available at easter time.

CatsRCute · 02/04/2022 05:17

Easter eggs are fine, they’ll be a treat for sunset. We did Ramadan shopping the other week and put Easter eggs in the trolley too. It’s just chocolate! Eid is celebrated after Ramadan is over, so hold up on the eid card just yet.

Hi

Children are not obliged to fast until puberty. Some older children may fast during non school days especially during winter and they could always eat them after sunset.

The children would love the chocolate eggs and will be happy to receive them aswell.
