Life of Brian

Life of Brian is on tv tonight. Some Christians are offended by it, but I think it's a great film - a bit irreverent but fair comment on religion and religious types. And I am a church-going Sunday school teacher.

Any Christian MNetters find it blasphemous? I'd be interested to hear why.

The crucifixion scene is a wee bit close to the bone, but that's just because the crucifixion of Christ is such a powerful mental image to me. It's not a depiction of Christ, so it's not blasphemous.

Personally, I think Mel Gibson's Passion film skirts much closer to blasphemy for me than the Life of Brian, which actually displays quite a bit of respect towards Jesus Himself.

LoB is, as far as I can see, primarily taking the mickey out of Christians, and that isn't blasphemy.

Not blasphemous as it is not about christ, just someone being mistaken for him

Nyx · 31/12/2007 21:38

I agree with orangehead - it's about an ordinary bloke, not Christ! I could never see what all the furore was about.

I loved the Mel Gibson movie - I was bawling at one point (where Mary sees Him stumble and you get a flashback to where He was a little boy).

Life of Brian is, IMO, hilarious...and I don't like all Monty Python stuff as a rule, just some of it

Just seen Biggus Diccus. How Palin kept a straight face I don't know.

GodzillasResolutoryBumcheek · 31/12/2007 22:49

Theoretically it is blasphemous, in the sense that to blaspheme is to be 'impiously irreverent'.

anorak · 31/12/2007 22:53

It's a wonderful, wonderful film which perfectly portrays the mindless 'following' that happens in some religious circles.

Elasticwoman · 01/01/2008 16:17

So no one thinks the Monty Python team are heading for the fire and brimstone?
