Yellow pages, any Catholic church ytou can find, call them and Priest will now every one in yur locality

She can take Communion in Anglican, but no definitely not the same- Anglican is Protestant

Unfitmother · 12/12/2007 18:17

I asked at the local library

needmorecoffee · 12/12/2007 18:18

see, how stupid am I! I read something about the Anglican and catholic churches being re-united and assumed it was all the same thing. Or is that high Anglican?
Also didn't realise that each city has zillions of bishops but all different types of churches.

Also need to find a church for my mum when she moves here. I'm assuming she's high anglican cos she talks about priests and waving incense and stuff...
Anyone got a quick summary as to how they are all different?

OP posts:
Peachy · 12/12/2007 18:20

Ah see high anglican is more like Catholic but still not the same

Did you really not know that about the Bishops? Mind you I think I have a lecture next term from each and every single one of them so.......

needmorecoffee · 12/12/2007 18:23

nope, assumed one bishop, one city. Hadn't really realised that there were all these different types of churches. When I went I just picked the nearest one!

Catholic is what arose after the split from the Orthodox Churxh; Protestant is what came after the Henry VIII dissolution; then there's loads ond loads of different denominations on top of that again (methodist, baptist, URC, etc etc etc)

She could be Cathoolic or High Church with incense. Does her Faith ban contraceptin, abortion and acknowledge the Pope? If so she's Catholic 9also a tendency to attend palces with sacred heart in the name is a dead giveaway)

needmorecoffee · 12/12/2007 18:25

my friend is catholic but I'm guessing my mum is anglican or high anglican. She's never mentioned the Pope. But she did refer to her vicar as a priest and not 'the vicar'

Oh and if I had to choose you a grouping, I'd pick Quakers (Society of friends)

Peachy · 12/12/2007 18:26

Hmm, could be either way- there's lots of both near you anyway though

DingdongMaryBonhigh · 12/12/2007 18:32

Give us a clue as to where you live, we might be able to help that way.

Calling the vicar a priest is fairly common nowadays, even in "middling" rather than high churches.

www.acny.org.uk will help you find the nearest Anglican church. As to whether its high or not, it will depend on how much info they've put on that website. Some give lots of details, others just the bare minimum. If they call their main Sunday service "Mass" it will be Anglo-Catholic. If they say "Eucharist" it will be middling-to-high. If they say "Holy Communion", it is more likely to be low church. Obviously that's not a catch-all situation, but it gives you a rough idea...

Personally I don't consider myself a Protestant, and I'm an Anglican (but I used to be Roman Catholic).

needmorecoffee · 12/12/2007 18:33

I can'#t find any Peachy.
When I was little we used to go to a church that did it all in Latin. Quite liked that. Very soothing but goodness knows what they were saying plus I could never remember the reposnses and say them right.
Sadly, most of my knowledge comes from watching Father Ted

thankyou. I can pass that on.

DingdongMaryBonhigh · 12/12/2007 18:43

Christ Church Downend looks low church to me as their main Sunday service only has communion once a month...

still checking...

DingdongMaryBonhigh · 12/12/2007 18:49

I've got a friend who's a Lay Minister at Holy Trinity, Kingswood, their church is fairly low church, but they are very friendly (I've visited there)

needmorecoffee · 12/12/2007 18:51

the Downend church looks pretty horrid. Unless you like giant illuminated crosses on the side of what was a nice 18th century church.
And chruch rock music blasting out.

needmorecoffee · 12/12/2007 18:52

I reckon my mum is more a high church type. She doesn't hold with happy clappy type stuff.

DingdongMaryBonhigh · 12/12/2007 18:55

Most of the churches on acny don't show much info.

Is this one any use to you? It has Sunday Eucharists, and Midnight Mass at Christmas:

www.stmaryredcliffe.co.uk

My friend is on holiday, otherwise I'd seek her advice...

Peachy · 12/12/2007 20:05

St MAry redcliffe is a place with a good rep.

NMC will have a look tomorrow for you- can't maange more than a few minutes at pc atm (not well, ahd a bit of bleeding Sunday) but have if nothing else comes up can ask chap next door (well he's head of theology right? LOL)

DutchOmainapeartree · 12/12/2007 22:44

How are things with your needmorecoffee?

needmorecoffee · 13/12/2007 09:01

Thanks everyone. I'll let my friend know and send her the web sites (I did notes that confessions were from 7pm to 7.20. Maybe they don't have many suinners down at St Josephs!) and I'll go look at the Redcliffe church for my mum.
Just waiting on a council house or trying to buy for her. Nightmare.

DingdongMaryBonhigh · 13/12/2007 18:40

20 minutes doesn't seem very long - all you'd need is someone with a lot to confess to, and that'd be 20 mins GONE!

Our Vicar does "confessions by appointment". One day I got fed up of him going on about it (as a former RC, I have "brown box syndrome"), so I offered to let him hear my confession, when he started backpedalling fast! Must have been worried what I'd confess to!
