The Power of Now

I'd be interested to hear thoughts on this book before I part with a fiver!

I am guilty of trying a few books in order to feel a bit more settled and peaceful. There's different times for different books of course, but my two old faithfuls aren't helping me - a Dalai Lama one and just finished Pema Chodron. She struck me as a bit strange tbh.

I listened to Lee Mack doing a waffly podcast that mentioned this book and it struck me we might be going through similar things at a similar age etc.

But I also know it's easy for me to buy these things and they wind up at the charity shop. So I thought I'd ask here for any thoughts.

I would recommend it and often do to people who are seeking the Truth!

CarmelBeach · 18/04/2021 20:47

I am not seeking a truth

More a combination of guidance and discipline

I need to show more compassion and generosity to my family but I also need that discipline you get from having a reason to do daily ...something..to a higher power.

All thoughts on helpful books are welcome!

I read it and found it helpful, but I've read ALL the self help books and lots of philosophy and spirituality. So I'm not a neutral audience. I did not buy it, I read someone else's. I think it was quite heavy going.

Thank you Love

Do you have any other recommendations?

A New Earth is better. Both very good though.

The breethe app has Eckhart reading some chapters if you wanted to try it before you buy. I live listening to it but probably wouldn't want to read it.

I found it quite hard going to be honest. There are a lot of similar books pointing to the same thing.
I have read many books, some of them don't resonate , some l just take bits, but l have a handful that l would be reluctant to let go,
Rediscovering life by Antony De Mellor
Awareness by Anthony De Mellor
In the Meantime by Iyanla Vanzant
Until Today by Iyanla Vanzant
Untethered Soul
The road less travelled

I also enjoy listening to Mooji and Sadguru on youtube.

Thanks all
I had a look in a bookshop and I can see it's not for me

I will look at the other suggestions now, thanks so much.

I love the Prophet by Khalil Gibran

I’ve had a copy by my bed for most of lockdown Blush. Unread. Except the first chapter.

I don’t think it’s along the lines of what you are looking for at all but my favourite self-help books have been Untamed by Glennon Doyle and Feel the Fear and Do It Anyway by Susan Jeffers. And I’ve read a lot of these sorts of books. Neither are about seeking a spiritual discipline though.

The Untethered Soul is quite good and I’d second that and The Road Less Travelled and The Prophet.

The thing that’s made the biggest difference to me is the Calm App. That helps with daily discipline and gets you straight to meditating. There are different meditations like Loving Kindness etc. Seriously recommend that over most self help books.

Is there any particular religion or spirituality you are drawn to? Could you explore a few? There’s lots of free courses online (ie Alpha for those wanting to know what Christianity is about but there will be others too for Islam/Hinduism/Buddhism etc, OU online might even have a free course).

I really think that the Higher Power experience comes in silence. If you have space to sit and be silent and calm, then it sometimes just “happens”.

Spiritual discipline might be more dependent on which form of spirituality or religion you choose to follow.

I borrowed it from the library and enjoyed it up to a point then it kind of lost me. To be honest for learning about mindfulness and meditation I prefer 'how to find peace in a frantic world' but that is because it is more 'scientific' than 'spiritual' and seemed not to jar as much with my inner cynic!

quinin · 27/05/2021 09:18

I'm curious as to why you feel you need to show more compassion and generosity to your family, not in a narky way, I am genuinely interested.

Have you read Louise Hay - you can heal
Your life?

This book really changed in my approach to life in general. It's practical, with a big emphasis on spiritual guidance, has exercises, affirmations and daily routines ideas.

I love The Power of Now and feel it is worth sticking with,A New Earth is good too.I read the Road Less Travelled a long time ago and got a lot from it.

I am not a Christian but have stumbled across a woman called Marianne Williamson .Something about her writing has really struck a chord with me and I have bought so many of her books during lockdown. She talks about God, but says it’s ok to swap this term for ‘ higher power’ etc.
