Bible in a year

I've just started the Fr Mike Schmitz bible in a year podcast and am really enjoying it.
Has anyone else started something similar as part of a NY resolution, perhaps a journal or other reading plan or a different podcast? If so would you like to share what you are doing?

Or indeed if you did it already how you found it and if it was a positive thing?

I usually post on the Christian coffeehouse but thought Id do this separately in case it's useful for anyone.

I've previously started the bible project and got a lot out of it but I felt like I was missing a lot as it was more of an explanation or structure and story.

I'm really enjoying the format as it's a 20 minute daily selection of readings plus a short comment from Fr Mike. They are adding in short parts of Job and Proverbs with Genesis, presumably to give you a mix of "story" with the less narrative friendly parts.

I've just started my 3rd round of the BiOY with Nicky & Pippa Gumbel & have found it really helpful. Used the App to read it the first time, mainly listened the second time and am listening in again this time (although i tend to listen in bed and fall asleep by the end, but it's quite a nice way to fall asleep!). There's a passage from Psalms/Proverbs, NT, OT and a commentary linking each with a theme for the day. I'm pretty new to all this and don't actually go to church, but have found the commentaries and the routine really helpful recently.

I've bought a journaling Bible in the hope it would encourage me to read it a bit more. I'm so scared of ruining it that I haven't even started Grin
Maybe I should use a podcast and read/journal along

Another recommendation for the Bible in One Year App. I'm on my second year of listening to it. I also start the day with lectio 365 which is a ten minute prayer around various scriptural themes. (Currently the beatitudes) It's an app from the 24/7 prayer movement.

I am finding Fr. Mike much easier to listen to that the Gumbels! Really enjoying it.

I read the Bible through every other year. This year I'm encouraging people from all our local churches to join me.
Last time I used the nicky gumbel app. This time I'm using a chronological Bible which is my favourite way to read it. So all events in chronological order, so if they think a psalm for example was written at a particular point in time it is inserted into the stories of David. Or Paul's letters onto acts.

Greybeardy · 14/01/2021 22:44

@Tiggles I didn’t realise you could get chronological Bibles - thanks for that tip - will definitely look one up!

Another one following Nicky Gumbel Bible in a year ( on Facebook).
Also big fan of UCB Word for Today. Read it
every morning before getting up, and it always seems to address whatever is worrying me.

ZenNudist · 17/01/2021 23:03

I'm happy with my father Mike podcast right now. It's Also chronological. Good to hear the Gumbels is worth a listen. I think I will see how I get on with keeping up with this podcast. I'm liking it so far but a year is a long time. Fr Mike is a trade off between not too much explaining (Which I would like) but a short running time which makes it easy to fit in.

I'm listening first thing by setting my alarm earlier which means I'm not praying first thing but immediately listening to the bible. I keep falling asleep again and have to listen again!! I'm going to have to get up earlier aren't I...

Meadowland I'm going to load up word for the day and read that before I start on the news or mumsnet over breakfast thanks for the tip. I like something to read.

I always end up listening last thing and have the same problem with falling asleep. Might try it on the bus into work or perhaps in work.

Am doing the Gumbles Bioy app again this year, trying to be more consistent. I like David Suchet reading the scriptures, I often listen when I go for a walk or jog. We had a WhatsApp group at church last year, was good as everyone doing the same thing so easy to chat about it.

ZenNudist · 24/01/2021 00:30

Well ds2 stole my in ear headphones so I have to use bigger ones that you can't lie comfortably on.... which stops me dozing.

I set my alarm early so if i do doze I can relisten. Its still a great start to the day.

I'm not doing a planned Bible in a Year, but, instead, have started to read the Bible, picking books at random.
I've so far read Job, Ezekial, Colossians, and a psalm a day. At the moment I'm in the middle of my 2nd reading of Isaiah. The first time I found it confusing, but I'm rereading it following a different order suggested on the internet.
What has struck me is how intertwined our culture is with the Bible - reading Job, I came across the verse 'I know that my Redeemer liveth' and I was straight into that wonderful aria in the Messiah.

I've been doing the Bible Project and have also been struck by how many quote and phrases have seeped into the collective conscience. I've also been reading Dominion by Tom Holland which explores how Christianity has shaped Western society. It's incredible really how radical Jesus's message was at the time and how influential it has been in ways many people take for granted now.

I've found the Bible Project really great. I thought I had a pretty good idea of what the Bible was about before but I really didn't. The videos are really informative and help to make sense of the structure and overarching themes. I'm nearly at the end now - I've just finished Romans.
