i'm a muslim and i love everything about this holiday/festival etc.
i live in the uk where it is a national holiday. so was practically forced to celebrate it. i.e everyone is off work, so they all meet up for family gatherings. mil cooks food. perhaps a roast meal to get with the spirit of her adopted country.but now i do it with my kids and we do it the way we want to.

but i simply love all the consumerism of it. the party atmosphere. the giving and reciving. even the peeling of endless potatos, which thankfully i now fob off onto the kids!

if anything, it's eid i find boring.but that is i think because i dont really live in a muslim area, and am forced to do it mil's way. but christmas is mine. to do with as i please.

i know all about the origins of the festival. and celebrate it anyways, or because of its mulitfaith origin. i dont know.

I'm not religious at all but I have always loved christmas, and get really excited about it starting in september !I too love all the things about it that people often complain about - the christmas things in the shops too early, I don't mind !Its fun and its for kids and brings back many happy memories of my own childhood.

all the debate about it makes my head hurt.

i have friend in rl who says she doesnt celebrate christmas. but is always wondering in october which family member will invite her for her christmas day off invite. and what she will wear. etc etc etc.
if that isnt celebrating, then what is?

I know many people who moan whinge and whine about this season and all it entails - i just think it is what you make of it !You can make your own personaly family traditions, spend a lot or spend a little, get it all done early, or rush about and do it all last minute.I just look forward to the looks on my dc's faces each year, when the christmas tree goes up, the lights go on, they see all the family and everyone is smiling and excited - and father christmas has been and got them just what they wanted ! Getting myself all worked up just thinking about it - I really love it. Even love the nativity story and all the hymns ect, it sall part of it

I celebrate 'Christmas', but really am only calling it Christmas to get along with everyone else...as an aetheist i don't actually believe in the Nativity, etc, but i do enjoy the Winter Celebration, the goodwill, the food, the jolliness of it all...and of course the looks on my kids faces on Christmas morning when they open their presents!

I think i can get away with celebrating the shortest day of the year a few days late to enjoy the day with (most of) the rest of England can't i?

course you can godzilla.
if i can celebrate the so called birthday of the son of god, (when i dont believe god has a son) in an incredibly consumerist capitalistic non environmentally way, then you most definitly can!
its a national celbration. not just a christian one. [ without the ridiculous hats please]

You're right, it is a national celebration - it is for everyone ! As long as they are not miserable about it !
