Whats the low down on Halloween from a Christian point of veiw? I am not a killjoy but can't imagine my DD with devils horns! (Her brothers maybe!!!). Our local CofE Church is having a festival of Light, our local Methodist Church is having a fancy dress Halloween ball and our local ASDA is having a field day!

How do you deal with Trick or Treaters? I don't want any calling, partly because it's not something I want my kids to get into and partly because I dislike the whole thing, We've put a sign on the door the last few years, but we lived in a city and I didn't care what anyone thought! Now we have moved to a small village...I don't want to get known as a killjoy, but I still would like others to respect the fact that we don't "do" Hallowe'en, and stay away from our house.

I give sweets to children under 10 who dress up but are with older siblings or parents. I do have the odd egg thrown from older kids, why cant supermarkets ban the selling off eggs to kids? I know they must get them off parents if they can't buy them so why arent the parents checking? If I catch therm thjrowing one at our house I will make them clean it up.

i just think by us being apart of it we approve of the rituals... or we are trying to emulate/copy the event?

FlameInHell · 29/10/2007 13:27

Once again.... Halloween is nothing to do with pagan rituals, so it is emulating and approving nothing that you are so opposed to

monstermash · 29/10/2007 13:36

dh(staunch RC) was moaning about it last night, "pagan goings-on, don't think it's right, etc" but to me it's just fun for the kids with no religious conotation whatsoever. Although there doesn't seem to be much point if you can't get dressed up, carve a jack o lantern & run around the neighborhood ringing doorbells with your friends, shouting "trick or treat!"

Lil · 29/10/2007 13:39

dadtob It seems you find most rituals/traditions offensive. Humans have been on thye planet a lot longer than 2007 years, and old rituals ought to be as respected as the more recent ones!

dadtob · 29/10/2007 14:48

Lil- u misunderstand me?. Trying to understand why we do the things we do and try to learn concepts is knowledge. Me asking questions and giving my views is a good thing is it not? Isn?t this how we learn to understand each other?

This being a topic under this section, isn?t this the correct place to post views and questions?

SatanGeorge · 29/10/2007 15:07

So do you want to know what Halloween is then, is that what you are saying?

Have a gander in the archives, there are some lengthy explanations in there.

Get thee behind me, satangeorge!

just thought I'd copy the poem I put in the trick or treat bags for those wondering what to do - it helps me to fell I've done my thing, but am sensitive to others too:

I hope that you enjoy these sweets
and that today?s been lots of fun
But tonight when you go to bed
and the trick or treating?s done

Don?t be scared when you are in the dark
of witches, wizards and ghosts
You can trust in the One Above
to protect you just the most

He will keep you safe from scary things
If you will but ask Him to
And know that as you took these sweets
that I prayed to Him for you

God Bless You
