Ramadan

Wishing our Muslim sisters and brothers a good Ramadan. I don't know what the 'correct' expression would be. But, as a Jew who has recently tried to celebrate Passover by Zoom, I realise that it can be quite a challenge to celebrate a communal event under lockdown.

Shalom and Salaam.

Walaikum Salaam, thank you so very much!

You can use Ramadhan Mubarak (more common in South Asia) or Ramadhan Kareem (Middle East).

You are right, its going to be a strange experience this year. We often have many invites throughout the month from family and friends as well as events in Mosques, so now we have to learn to focus more on individual spiritual development!

Thanks again for your wishes.

Thank you, Dilbertian.

Ramadan Mubarak to you and to everyone!

Aleykum Selam, and Ramadan Mubarak!

I hope that despite the circumstances you still managed to have a spiritual and successful Passover!

Hi everyone,

Ramadan Mubarak and shalom to everyone.

I would like to help my housemate who is keeping Ramadan. Any suggestions from anyone?

He only moved in a few months back, is quite shy and it's just the two of us.

What can I do? Or not do?

SillyMoomin · 17/05/2020 08:36

Hi @serenada I’ve found with my partner just being more aware is the most important thing: ie; I don’t sit and eat breakfast in front of him!, I’ll take my plate to the kitchen

Don’t cook strong smelling foods at lunchtime!, and just be generally aware that as the month goes on they’ll get more tired, possibly more grumpy!, and will just need some patience. My partner says me asking “how he’s doing” really helps as it shows I care.

However, I have a question for all those observing Ramadan please!

Eid is now a week away!, and I would like to make a big feast for him. However, I can’t seem to get any firm information or understand from google when exactly the timing for Eid is. I know it may be Sunday depending on the moon etc, but it’s more the actual time on Sunday- does Eid start as the sun sets?, or is it after the 11pm prayer?

Any help would be much appreciated, trying to sort this as a surprise for him

H1978 · 17/05/2020 22:37

Eid will start as soon as the sun sets (either Saturday or Sunday) but if he follows Saudi Arabia we find out earlier as they are ahead in time than in the uk

H1978 · 17/05/2020 22:38

You would need to find out which country he follows to determine when Eid will be as the moon can’t be sighted here

SillyMoomin · 17/05/2020 22:47

Thanks H1978, that’s really helpful, he’s following the uk timings, which I think we’re on track for Sunday - it was just trying to clarify if it started at 9pm or 11pm

Thank you for your help, and Ramadan Mubarak

H1978 · 18/05/2020 00:30

Thank you no worries and it’s lovely and thoughtful that you’re planning on preparing a meal for him , I’m sure he’ll appreciate it as it’ll be difficult for him to be away from family and friends on such a important and special day
