Hello,
(Disclosure - I am a Christian) I am looking for people who are Atheists, Hindus, Buddhists, Pagans, Wiccans, Sikhs, Muslims, Agnostics. Is that everyone?!

I am doing a theology course and I need to interview three people with a different world view to mine. Umm..turns out finding people who have strong beliefs is harder than you might think.

Is there anyone who would be prepared for me to ask them the following questions over zoom (face to face interview):

  1. What gives life it's meaning? (meaning)
  2. Do humans have more intrinsic worth than animals? (morality)
  3. How did the world begin? (origin)
  4. What happens when we die? (destiny).

The point of the interview is for me to develop good listening skills and not be some sort of stealth attempt at evangelism.

I will write the interview up in under 500 words and submit it to my course leader. (RZIM Academy)

I will not use your real name.

I will not be using it to pass any judgment or compare it to what I believe. Although I do hope it will help me to reflect more deeply on what I do think.

I am genuinely interested in what people think and especially people who think differently.

Anyone?

How will your tutor know you practiced good listening? Would it be recorded then?

myohmywhatawonderfulday · 07/04/2020 19:38

No, it's not recorded. I won't I really say much other than the questions. I do need to take notes during it so I don't misrepresent what a person says.

The point that they are trying to make, I think, is to allow people to have their own opinion and not interrupt or offer your own opinions.

I, think (I hope!) I am able to do that already, but the course requires it.

I would be happy to if it wasn't a video recording, that puts me off tbh!

drunkyhumptydumpty · 07/04/2020 19:43

I'm happy to participate. I am an Atheist who strongly believes there are no Gods etc.

wheresmymojo · 07/04/2020 19:52

I'm also happy to - another atheist.

myohmywhatawonderfulday · 07/04/2020 21:39

Hi ya- its not a video recording. I am not going to record it - only notes. Its only those four questions so it can be as long or as short as the answers.

Thanks so much @drunkyhumptydumpty and @wheresmymojo - I have pm'd you.

I'm a humanist
when will you do it and how long do you think it would take?
I might be interested
especially since you didn't list humanists Wink

Agnostic / atheist / spiritualist daughter of clergyman here - happy to help!

speakout · 08/04/2020 07:07

Your questions contain a lot of bias. along th "when did you stop beating your wife" idea.

For instance- 1. What gives life it's meaning? That quetion is subjectively biased. Who said life has " meaning"? Trying to identify the "meaning giver as a " what" makes no sense.
Does there need to be a "meaning" to life?

2, . Do humans have more intrinsic worth than animals? Again bias- who said that any life has "worth"? What does that even mean?

donquixotedelamancha · 08/04/2020 07:31

Amy reason you don't want to interview Maradonians?

myohmywhatawonderfulday · 08/04/2020 11:19

@speakout - that is an interesting point that you make about the questions. They are the standard questions.

I think they are the starting point not the end point.

So 'What gives life its meaning' gives someone from a different view point from mine the chance to say - well - exactly your points.

@donquixoitedelmancha - my bad!

@StillWeRise and @wannabebetter - I have pm'd you - thanks so much for your offer for help.

Thank you so much to the brave mumsnetters who have allowed me to interview them over the past two days. I feel very privileged that you shared your thoughts and views with me.

Thank you to anyone who offered to speak with me. I have completed all the interviews that I need to for my course now and don't need to do any more.

What I will say though, it was one of the most interesting things I have done in such a long time, and I hope I will find a way to hear more about what other people think because I loved it and it gave me a lot of things to reflect on and find out more about.

Thank you!
