Hey, I’m looking to attend daily prayer at a local church. I haven’t been before but I want to join. If anyone could answer any of these questions I’d be really grateful:
Can anybody attend daily prayer - ie a newcomer with no prior experience that’s never been to church in their life - and, if so, do I need to bring anything? I’m new to religion and don’t know much about it

  • do I need any prior knowledge or a prayer book? Does it matter if I don’t yet know the prayers, do people recite them out loud?

Thank you in advance x

Yes, anyone can attend daily prayer; you don't have to be a member / attend regularly. There may well not be many there, so be prepared to be the 'new person' for a while and feel a bit out of place.
You wouldn't need to take anything with you; CofE churches will use Common Worship, which the church will have copies of, and which has the whole service in it, or there'll be a sheet with it all on. The congregation say the bits in bold and often read alternate verses of the psalms - we do at Evensong.
If you're not sure what to do, just follow the rest of the people there and you'll get the hang of it fairly quickly. I'm not new to religion, but I am to the CofE, and getting used to the office / liturgy has taken a while, but I feel now like I know what I'm doing.

If you want a sense of the structure of the service, download the 'Daily Prayer' app (free) for your phone and have a look. It's the online version of Common Worship, and has morning, evening and night prayers for each day and will give you an idea of what to expect, and which bits the congrgation says, what the priest will say etc.

Good luck!
