Lights going on by themselves

I have had a few odd experience since moving into my maisonette, som can be explained but others can not.

A while ago I had a late night caller every night without fail, I never answered the door as it rang about 3am every night, Instead I purchased a ring doorbell and reported it to the police.

I also put up security lighting as a deterrent. The doorbell caught someone on the cctv scurrying off into the bushes, and eventually the door caller stopped calling. The police came to see me and explained that one of my neighbours was under survellience for something and that the callers may have wrongly thought they lived at my address. There was an association with a garden ornament the lady at the address gave me that may have caused the caller to think her son lived at mine, he was into some bad stuff and basically the police thought the caller and this neighbour were linked.

Anyway, shortly afterwards the battery ran out in the doorbell and I forgot to charge it, I have since had a doorbell (various tunes) going off very loudly in the middle of the night. My son stayed over at mine and queried it, saying what is that noise that goes off, it sounds like a doorbell tune.

I have hunted in my bedroom for what could be the cause as it sounds very loud, almost like its under my pillow, but could find no source of the noise.

Now I just have come to terms with it and the fact that it goes off sporadically despite no battery supply and actually no transmitter either (it is not the Ring Doorbell)

Now other odd things are occurring that I find very strange. I have an electric fire in my lounge that displays flames and/or heat you select one or the other, now as my home is naturally very warm and has central heating I don't use the heat setting and its just for the display instead. I keep finding the heat on, yet I have turned it off, for example, last night I switched it off, noticed a humming and unplugged it, but when I came downstairs I could hear humming and the room was really warm. I realised the fire was again on.

I have got some battery operated lights in the lounge and was watching TV just now and the lights switched on, on 2 sets, the way you switch them on is a clicking switch which hadn't been pressed on either set.

Another more sinister thing that happened this weekend is that my front door handly has been snapped off and the cylinder lock is protruding, the handle was found on a neighbours property. I reported this to the police after a locksmith attended and advised that it had definitely been prised off and wasn't accidental. This happened between 2am when my friend left and 10am on Saturday morning, I heard no noise and they didn't break in but is has unnerved me.

I am now charging up my ring doorbell again and have organised a new front door with triple locks, but all these things seem odd, especially the battery lights coming on and the doorbell ringing with no batteries in it.

I know this is a weird thing to say but I am starting to think this is something paranormal

I would of crapped my self if anything like that happened in my home, sorry OP. I think you may be right about it being something spooky. Do you have cctv though at the front? I would maybe suggest getting some after the door?

BennyTheBall · 18/11/2019 21:24

It's not paranormal. There is no such thing.

There will be a reason for all of it. Dodgy wiring/crappy neighbours or a million possible other things.

Trustyourinnersatnav · 18/11/2019 21:24

My goodness, that's a lot of strange happenings! Do you believe in spirits? Have you had experiences like this before?

Jenasaurus · 18/11/2019 21:36

Thanks for the responses, I have only had one other experience that couldn't be explained.

When selecting University's for my DS, I travelled to Cornwall just over from Devon as he was interested in Plymouth as an option. We stayed in a log cabin at a holiday site and were virtually the only ones there as it was in March.

When we got back to the cabin on the last night, I asked my DS if he wanted to leave that night or the next day, he said he wanted to stay over, so we watched a film and then turned into our rooms to sleep at about 10am. I woke up to hear what sounded like a bathroom light switch going on, I was annoyed as my son had chosen the room with the ensuite and assumed he had blocked the loo and was using the one next to me instead. Then I realised the foot steps sounded unfamiliar (you know how you can tell when its someone you know and the way they walk). My room was directly opposite my sons, with the doors facing each other, uknown to me at the same time (about 3am) he was standing scared behind his door hearing the same sounds..we both opened our doors at the same time to see the other one standing there. My son said he wanted to leave, so we went to pack the car. I walked past the kitchen and saw all the doors open, so we packed quicker and then turned off the lights and left the lodge...as we were driving away the lights in the lodge turned on. My DS said he had been hearing and seeing things all week in the lodge. When I got back I contacted the site and they said, "oh we do have a resident ghost" Apparently the restaurant on the site was used by the French prisoners of war. However I believe it may be an intruder was in the lodge rather than a ghost.

I think you definitely need CCTV, inside and out. Have a look on Amazon, they have sets fairly cheap.

I don't know how your so calm, I'd be pissing my pants!

MotherOfLittlePeople · 18/11/2019 22:18

Even that second post from OP was pretty scary. As if your son had heard and seen things all week!! Something may off followed you back. Chilling to read

Jenasaurus · 18/11/2019 22:30

well I suspect I may have just woken the neighbours. My DS was concerned about me being here with the door not safe so decided to stay over at mine, the only thing is I didn't know he was coming over.

I set a booby trap by the door, so I would hear if someone breaks in, and went to my room 2 flights up. (my masionette is over 3 floors) I then turned off the lights and posted on here..then my DD who was her bedroom opposite me texted me to say "mum, did you hear that"...I could hear loud noised and footsteps coming up towards my room. It was all in darkness, I was trying to turn my phone into a torch to go and investigate, when the door flung open and I couldn't see who was there so I did the normal thing people do and screamed my head off! My son didn't look amused, he said, "mum the neighbours will call the police now!" I don't think they will but I now know my reaction when faced with an intruder is to scream as loud as I can!

So my DS is sleeping over tonight, so I feel a lot safer, but very foolish for my reaction

All of them can be explained. For some you know the explanations, for some you don't.

Trustyourinnersatnav · 19/11/2019 17:38

Blimey that second story is truly chilling! Think your reaction is quite normal given the circumstance! I agree with having the CCTV, hope things settle down for you

mostlydrinkstea · 19/11/2019 17:45

Change the batteries in anything that needs it. Put up CCTV to check on callers. It is probably nothing. I had a house where stuff kicked off when it was damp. Something to do,with the wiring maybe.

If after doing all of this you want a priest to bless the house then just call the local RC or C of E church. I've done this in the past and if nothing else it marks a new start in a place.
