Bedtime and mealtime prayers for a 2 year old

Hello ladies,

can anyone send me some bedtime and mealtime prayers, maybe in verse? So far we're just saying what comes into our heads, but I would like to have some little verses she can learn. TIA!

I'm not a practicing Christian now, but when I was a child I memorised this and was supposed to say it every night before going to bed:

Gentle Jesus, meek and mild,
Look upon this little child.
Pity my simplicity,
Suffer me to come to thee.
God bless , and ,
For ever and ever,
Amen

( insert names of family members/personally important people etc)

I have just looked it up on the internet and been surprised to find that it's actually the first verse of a poem by Charles Wesley.

We used to do this one when the DC were little and before I had a crisis of faith !

Dear God,
Thank you for the world so sweet
thank you for the food we eat
thank you for the birds that sing
thak you god for everything
Amen

Then we used to do
God Bless Mummy
God Bless Daddy
God bless XXX(siblings)
god bless everyone

But we had to stop this as it was getting like a telephone directory!

Why not get a book like this? We don't have this one, but we have the children's bible done by the same pair, and it's fantastic - really good text and great pictures.

Just wondering - is there any particular reason you want your daughter to pray in verse? Not that I think it's bad - but personally I pray in prose, so it wouldn't have occurred to me to want to teach DS to pray any other way. (Not that he does anything more than say "Amen" at the end of our prayers currently )

Hey everyone,
thank you very much! As an explanation (didn't want to make that first post too long): I am a German mom raising my dd bilingually German (first language, everyone speaks it to her except me) and English (second language, she hears it from me and on the phone from American Granny and Grampa). I spent some time in the U. S. by the way.
I myself pray in prose and really rather talk to God, that's what I am doing with her right now. I just remember that I really enjoyed some of my "child prayers" when I was little. Especially when I could or would not think of something or embedded into the night-time-ritual. I know several in German (that Grandparents use with her), but I could not think of any in English. And instead of googling I rather asked you lovely ladies!! Just figured it would be nice to have some that are mn approved.... I would love to have a little book, just as I said - I am in Germany.
If you can think of any for mealtimes? We have a really nice one in German where we thank for food and drink, maybe there's something like that?
LOL at the telephone directory, MrsWeasley, I can just see that coming - it is exactly what I used to do....

When I was at school we all had to say this before lunch:

For what we are about to receive,
may the lord make us truly thankful.
Amen

God our father
we come to say
thankyou for your love today
guard us in the dark of night
and in the morning send your light

We did have one before meal time but I can't remember it.

The meal one had the line "bless the hands that made this food"

I will ask my sister, she has a better memory than me!

I'm intrigued now, so have done some trawling. Most of what is out there is unmitigatinly awful (imho!), but I've found a few I think could be okay...

Have to say - still haven't seen anything that I prefer to a simple prose sentence prayer!

Just don't teach her the prayer I used to have to say every night.

You would have to have absolutely no imagination at all not to realise how a sensitive child would react to that. Thanks, Mum.

RosaLuxemburg, that's really the only one I knew in English, but as you said, it never really came to my mind to use it....

RosaLuxembourg - you too? I am still (aged 46 terrified of the dark/shutting my eyes because of it, and it is the reason why I have never taught my dcs nighttime prayers . I always hope a loving God would understand a childish fear....
