HAS ANYONE BEEN TO A SPIRITUALIST CHURCH?

johnnydeppsmistress · 16/09/2004 20:29

I AM V.INTERESTED IN ALL THINGS SPIRITUAL 7 I HAVE REACHED A POINT IN MY LIFE WHERE I FEEL I NEED SOME KIND OF GUIDANCE. I HAVE NO RELIGIOUS BELIEFS AND DO NOT REALLY BELIEVE IN GOD, BUT DO BELIEVE THAT THERE IS AN AFTER-LIFE.

FOR THESE REASONS I HAVE BEEN THINKING ABOUT GOING TO A LOCAL SPIRITUALIST CHURCH AND WOULD BE INTERESTED IF ANYONE HAS BEEN OR GOES TO ONE. WHAT CAN I EXPECT, ETC?

jdm have never been to one as my sister advised me against it....but that's not to say there is anything wrong with it.....have been to one of those chuchey does where they get someone out at the front who is a physic and they're getting all these spirits coming in and people get called in from the audience as their loved one is about.....I believe in the after life very very much as does my dh, we both imagine his mum and my dad chatting and watching us a lot....but seriously at the front of this group of people there was an artist who drew a picture of dh's beloved mother a little after she'd died and I swear it was the spitting image of her....interesting thread btw and also would love to go to a Spiritualist church...

where i used to live when growing up there was a tiny spiritualist church on the corner of the road. At night no-one would walk through the churchyard which must have been all of about 20 foot! although it got quite a bit of traffic through the day.... it was just part of our childhood!!!the same people went week after week so must have been quite successful

lilsmum · 16/09/2004 21:55

i have been to one once..... i was in a similar situation i needed some reassurance and guidance but it didnt really do much for me to be honest it didnt seem real, now this could be just the one by me wasnt very good give it a shot and see the best thing i did at around the same time was i went to see a medium and this was very healing for me and did help alot... i too dont really believe in god etc but found this very healing.HTH

artyjoe · 16/09/2004 22:22

I've been to several spiritualist churches, including the Arthur Findlay College, and wouldn't say they were a place of guidance...the courses are but not the 'church' element. However, the spiritualist church in London do medium sessions which have been extremely helpful and I have often in the past gone to a psychic if in need of guidance or comfort.

I personally found the Celestine Prophecy gave me much more food for thought than any form of 'group' meeting, but it's all down to personal taste and lifestage.

Good luck in your search - Joe

has our follow on leading lady escaped her thread! here maybe...

I have been to a pentecostal church which was hands in the air spiritualist church style. It might be just wot you like, but it can also sweep you away and personally I found it unrealistic because I asked too many questions which they did not like. You have to fit in with their ethos and a deep faith in God and a personal relationship with Jesus is what you should expect and is expected and actively encouraged. I found it put me in a box spiritually and whilst I liked the pray and being part of a group of people it felt very pressured and the love of GOD always comes first. Consequently it was not for me - but if you are interested you could always go and observe - I would advise just taking it slowly cos it can be quite a full on experience.

Artyjoe you are most welcome to inspire us with your thoughts re Celestine. We are starting a new thread next week beginning at insight one... JDMistress you are also most welcome.

I just bought Diana Coopers book "a little light on the spiritual laws" which runs along similar lines to CP and is light reading but quite insightful.

My mil has been president of her local spiritualist church for years. They do healing and talking to those who've 'passed over' etc. It's all very benign, nothing horrid about it at all.

Hi

Would like to add that I am a christian spiritualist. I used to attend church as a child and formed a belief.

There is nothing sinister or dark about spiritualism. It is a wonderful way of broadening your outlook on the why's and wherefore's of all sorts of things. There are many reasons why people who become interested, become interested, not because they are dark or evil. It can be a very informative circle to be part of. I don't go every week but on the odd occassion I do and send love and healing as well as recieve it.

I suggest that if you are interested in spiritualism in any way, get in touch with the Spiritual National Union who will put you in contact with a SNU church in your area. Stick with SNU and you will remain in the right area.

Good luck, {{{love and light.}}}

Snugs · 25/10/2004 12:29

Sorry, but I feel that I have to say this:

The SNU are great if you have a christian background/belief or have no religion but can cope with a christian 'leaning'.

However .... I am Pagan and could not cope with the overwhelming 'church' atmosphere of the local SNU meetings. Also, many of the established members were very friendly - until they found out my beliefs. They then became very stand-offish and, in some cases, downright insulting.

Nothing against the SNU in general - just trying (badly) to say that it doesn't suit everyone. I would hate for someone to go through an experience like mine and have it put them off spiritualism all together.

johnnydeppsmistress · 04/11/2004 11:49

I went to my local Spriritualist church to a "demonstration of mediumship" several weeks ago. Although no messages came through for me, I found it very calming. We did have to sing one hymn (one too many) and say a prayer at the end but apart from that it was not overly religious. There were people from all walks of life. They also run healing sessions which you can go to for actual healing or just to "benefit from the calm & peaceful atmosphere" (their words!) which I am going to soon. It may or may not "guide" me in the right direction in my life but I did find the visit pleasant and will definitely go again (even if I do have to mime to a hymn I've never heard of).

I've been going to a spiritualist church since about easter, and I'm now in a developing circle. It is calming and friendly, I like the idea of a more pagan approach, but I'm not sure how I'd get into anything here.
It's quite upbeat, and I really enjoy the social aspect of it.
I enjoy the meditation and philosophy but I still have an open mind on the subject, I have had messages but am not yet convinced of the afterlife.

DNHandTNS · 01/02/2021 21:41

I used to live next door to one and that's the closest I got. They do seances and stuff like summon spirits that churches don't do. I found it a bit weird. but then I was brought up in church. If you are thinking it's Christian, um- the definition of Christian is "Follower of Christ" so don't be fooled. If you're looking for the dark side, there you go. If you want assurance of life after death it's not somewhere I would go.

Has anyone else had any experience of this?

It’s not like spiritualism is not relevant after 20 years, so what it it’s dug up from the past?

Besidetheprompromprom · 15/06/2024 11:34

It's weird. Did you drag up the other one too?

That’s your opinion on it being weird. I found the thread on an internet search & wanted to ask - why would I start a new thread. What I find odd is you commenting on a thread you having no interest in the subject - why waste your time.

as for “the other one” ? 🤷‍♀️ No idea what you are writing about

AceofPentacles · 17/06/2024 20:43

Yes I visit a spiritualist church on occasion but find it's a bit too God-focused for me. I believe we are all one consciousness and therefore the creator isn't just one person. The people at the church were lovely though and I attended their development circle for a while. Lots of tea and biscuits!

Sorciere1 · 17/06/2024 22:08

Interesting, I wish there were one near me. I'd go in a shot, even though I'm s polytheist. Out of curiosity; was it Jesus-God or generic god?

AceofPentacles · 18/06/2024 08:11

In the Seven Principles it's just generic God.

Augustus40 · 28/07/2024 03:32

Personally. I find spiritualism very unhealthy dwelling on the deceAsed like that.

Why do you think that’s unhealthy if you don’t mind me asking?

Wow! So it is - over 20 years old. I didn't notice. Just shows nothing ever really dies once it's out there on the world wide web 😱

It's a very shouty title and opening post. Maybe the spirits are a bit deaf. 😀

But they're not dead, so you can stop grieving and feel good hearing from your loved ones, knowing one day you will be reunited. Well, that's how I see it, personally.
