Mormon's AND JW's knocked on my door today

Mormons this morning and JW this eve.

Seriously, I don't need this. I don't need to explain politely every time that I am NOT interested.

It's not acceptable for me to be rude but I am tired of this, tired of them knocking on my door at least once a month.

How do I get them to stop? I've tried to look on their websites for contact details and can't find anything.

Pissed off today.

A happy co-incidence of DH putting this door knocker up is that the JW have never called again.

Mormon's AND JW's knocked on my door today
LazyFace · 20/04/2019 08:47

I just ignore the knocks... Have a look out the glass and if I see them I just walk away.

Thirtyrock39 · 20/04/2019 08:55

When we were kids we made my dad put a dress on to be a character in our show and he answered the door to the JWs in said dress- they took one look at him and scarpered !

Lessstressedhemum · 20/04/2019 10:12

Making money is less of a priority for Jw than the ministry work. A lot of them work part time or are self employed, cleaning windows etc. Many of the women don't work, so that they can spend more time on the ministry.

Years ago (I don't know about nowadays) education was actively discouraged, especially for girls, as it was a distraction and prevented them from taking in the only knowledge that counted - that of jehovah and Jesus. Careers were viewed similarly. I don't imagine much has changed as they are still expecting Armageddon.

lljkk · 20/04/2019 10:44

What happens when JWs knock on the doors of the Mormons? What sort of convo do they have? Or other evangelicals.
Maybe I'll ask next time.

Rich JWs do subsidise the others (yes, DD's mate was JW from a fin. comfy family). The husband was some kind of businessman & mom had a PT job (not sure what).

There was a small house overcrowded with JW family on my road. I don't know their fin. circumstances but they certainly made do with a lot less house per person than many people would tolerate.

StarStruckStarGazer · 25/04/2019 11:43

I made the BIG mistake of not making my excuses and letting them wander off. Now I have weekly visits. If I hide away and don't answer the door, they just come back the next day.

The weird thing is I've been open about my faith, so I don't understand why or how they think they'll convert me. Hmm

headinhands · 26/04/2019 00:42

Oh my, if I had them visit on the same day I would love it. I'd try and get them together and watch them argue Smile

Lessstressedhemum · 26/04/2019 00:50

Star, they think that you will convert because you are already open to God, you just need to be shown the truth about false religion. Once you know the Truth, you will turn your back on Satan and his minion, the Whore of Babylon, (any faith but jw) and start true worship with Jehovah's organisation.

Seahorseshoe · 26/04/2019 01:03

DS and I asked them (JW) in when he was about 20, he is an atheist but has always been interested in religion. We got to the fact that they don't believe in evolution and dinosaurs and, really, we should've opened with that.

Ask them about evolution and dinosaurs - there's no where they can go with that.

Or just say, "not today thank you" and bid them goodbye.

HeronLanyon · 26/04/2019 01:08

i used to live on street bothered by Jehovahs witnesses - I was put on the ‘do not disturb’ list at my insistence. Didn’t work at all as disturbed every few weeks. Was livid about it especially as they often had poor unfortunate young children being dragged around by them so I couldn’t let rip quite as much as I wanted. Infuriating !

speakout · 26/04/2019 06:37

Don't engage in any conversation with them.
They are trained to see that as interest, even if you disagree and counter argue they will note that down in their records and you will get subsequent visits.
I dislike religious evangelism and people have no right trying to peddle their religious doctrine door to door. It is a huge intrusion.

Having said that I have a close family member who is Mormon, and have come to personally know some missionaries. They are themselves a product of indoctrination and brainwashing. Usually young men, only 19 or so, usually many miles from home.
Incredible restrictions piut on their lives while they are on mission work, unbelievable rules about daily behaviour, forced to pound the pavements. Many suffer MH problems and churches don't allow them to seek medical help, encouraging them to find answers through prayer,
They have mostly grown up in environments where they don't know of life outside the church, they believe their mission is to help save people.
I don't agree with what they are doing, but they are young and misguided, trying to have an argument for fun with them is pointless.

Redpostbox · 28/04/2019 22:05

My problem is people canvassing for the local elections. Drives me mad. Constantly knocking on my door. I have already voted by post so there is no need to knock but they just ignore that when I tell them.

Also I am constantly getting people knocking about changing my energy supplier.

Also charity knocking. I prefer to choose who to donate to myself rather than be pressured. I have my regular charities that I donate to already.

Doorbell constantly ringing!

Never once had any JW or Mormons though

StarStruckStarGazer · 10/05/2019 07:36

@Lessstressedhemum ''tis a bit early for a celebratory drink, so I guess it'll be tea till tonight. Last week I decided I wasn't going to 'engage' as I'm wasting their time as much as mine. They haven't visited this week. Star

They've literally got an answer for everything. I have a book I haven't looked at, but they honed in on a part of my life, how scripture says God would never let this happen, it's the devil bla bla bla.

Last time they were here, the week before I saw the bread & wine being passed around on a video, I asked oh do you just look at it. It was explained that only those who think they're going to heaven take from the plate etc. So I said, in Revelation it talks about the second judgement, how does that work, plus those who don't think they're going, is there some sort of reconciliation at all. It was all really confusing.

I think it is sneaky that they'll talk all nice, you'll say 'Yes but...' They have an answer in JW talk that dispels alleged myths. They literally cling on to this weakness as it were, giving readings and JW literature, to try and sway you. Angry

It must be disheartening for them, trying to engage folk who really do not want to know, yet for some reason they still go from door to door. You seldom hear anything positive, like Aunt Sarah has seen the light and joined.

Since time began people spent their time bashing JW, you'd think they'd adopt better methodology. So people aren't saying, 'omg the JW were at my door!'

Wishing you all a peaceful day / weekend, with no uninvited peoples at your door. Grin

Lessstressedhemum · 10/05/2019 12:56

Star, only the "anointed" take the bread and wine, I.e. those who believe that they are one of the 144,000 going to heaven to rule as Princes with Jesus in His government. The rest of JW folk hope that they will survive armageddon, if they have obeyed the rules closely enough, done enough preaching work, not listened to the wrong kind of music etc. Everyone else, (anyone who is either not a good enough jw or not a jw at all) will die at armageddon.

The Resurrection of the dead and the second judgement isn't for those alive at armageddon or those who have rejected jw teaching in life. It is for all those who died before they ever had a chance to learn the truth. They will be resurrected either to a Resurrection of life (if the choose to obey jehovah) or to judgement (should they choose not to).

The Devil is behind literally everything, but especially false religion (everything but them). Anything bad that happens in your life is ultimately caused by the devil because he is behind all your beliefs, priorities and choices unless you let jehovah set them for you. I am a devout Christian who reads my Bible, prays, goes to church at every available opportunity, works hard to serve my God, family and community etc. but I am still doomed because I am actually worshipping the devil.
Their interpretation of the Bible is very literal and often quite simplistic but, at other times, very arcane. So that they can overturn "myths" without much thought, but can then confuse folk with "hidden" knowledge. At least they have stopped predicting that armageddon will be next week because they have got the date wrong so many times.
One of the things that they rely on is that most folk today don't have a great amount of Bible knowledge or a very in depth understanding of various faiths, which makes it easier for them to hook folk who engage with them. Nowadays, they have a scripture verse or two every month that they use on the doors to address a common problem - illness, poverty, mental health, corrupt politicians - and they try to use that to start up conversations.
I actually feel a bit sorry for most jws because they are usually lovely people who genuinely believe that they are helping others. But they are completely in the grip of the governing body and are absolutely brainwashed into believing that they (the GB) have a direct line to God. They are the "faithful and discreet slave class" with whom jehovah is in direct communication.

Oh dear, sorry this is so long. It's a bit of a bug bear of mineBlush

StarStruckStarGazer · 10/05/2019 16:41

Oh wow, thank you so much, the lady was lovely, I would say, my faith says this, she would reply ah this bible passage says the devil. I didn't feel like getting into a heated debate about it all, so merely nodded and said I would read the scripture.

It must be awful to think you are subservient, according to archaic rules.

I might have a look and see how the faith all started.

Lessstressedhemum · 10/05/2019 18:56

It makes interesting reading! So do all the mistaken predictions and changes of "light".

When I was in, it was still current light that women shouldn't have a bob because cutting your hair shorter than shoulder length would make a woman go bald!

gabsdot45 · 04/06/2019 21:41

Tell the JWs that you're a Mormon. That has always worked for me. (I actually am a Mormon).
Telling the Mormon's you're a JW won't work though. LOL.

Just say no thanks. I was a Mormon missionary in my youth and we're pretty thick skinned.

mineofuselessinformation · 04/06/2019 21:53

I just say 'I don't accept religious callers at my door'. It seems to have done the trick.

stucknoue · 04/06/2019 21:56

For the JW's an I give blood sticker does the trick but the Mormons are not so easy to fob off so I either don't open the door (they are so easy to spot) or tell them that I don't believe in patriarchal religions

Someonesayroadtrip · 11/08/2019 18:18

To answer the question, what happens when JWs knock on the door of Mormons ... you say your Mormon and they automatically put you on their do not call list. 😂 usually anyway.

I used to be Mormon, I generally would talk to them about whatever they were interested in saying. I've always enjoyed discussing religion. I know some Mormons who would say, I'll take your leaflet if you take a Book of Mormon, they never see anyone again!

Mormons are tricker to get rid of as they don't have any list and missionaries change so often that it would be impossible to keep track in its current format, I suspect the way people serve missions will change soon enough though. I've always hated the idea of knocking in doors or prosecuting.

Wehttam · 19/08/2019 13:05

Ex JW here, I was raised as one, been clean from it for 20 years now. Do not engage in conversation with them, they will keep coming back. They have a vested financial interest in getting you to have a bible study and become a brother or sister so you too can contribute to the Kingdom Hall and also witness to encourage more to be baptised. Think MLM. Most are naively going around witnessing with good intentions, it’s the organisation and Kingdom Hall elders who are corrupt. They have very insular viewpoints and are taught to see everything outside The Truth as being satanic and in need of saving. Avoid.

SapphireSeptember · 28/08/2019 12:42

Telling the JW that I'm a Mormon didn't work for me (I am, though a pretty half-arsed one who has major issues with the organisation as a whole.) Although I haven't seen the round my house for a while. (I'm not going to switch to a religion that tells me I can't have a blood transfusion if I need one, not drinking tea was bad enough.)

elfycat · 03/09/2019 20:19

The last Mormons who started talking to me (in a public place, having politely asked if I had a moment) opened with 'May we ask what religion you identify as?'

I thought of my options for a moment and replied 'Well most of my friends say I'm a witch.'

They seemed surprised and asked if I thought I was. I replied that it was as good a term for my non-committed, vagually 'woo' therapy qualification-led spirituality as I could think of, but I'm independent, and don't identify as a Wiccan. They seemed amused and bemused in equal measure.

JW on the other run for the hills. There's a Kingdom Hall a couple of roads away and I probably get a visit once a decade Grin.
