These touch my soul and remind me of the flying dreams I had as a girl.

Fingersnap - Blackbird

Ólafur Arnalds - Hægt, kemur ljósið

Nick Cave - By your side

Eric Whitacre - Fly to Paradise

Vitalogy · 24/11/2018 16:56

I got a bit emotional with Blackbird OutwiththeOutCrowd. I'd not heard any of your favourites before, thank you for posting, always good to hear new music.

The flying dreams are the best.

My pleasure, Vitalogy, thank you for your suggestions too! And yours as well leafbud. Quite a few I hadn't come across before.

Do you still have flying dreams, Vitalogy? I used to have them repeatedly as a child, but no longer.

Vitalogy · 24/11/2018 17:40

Do you still have flying dreams, Vitalogy? I used to have them repeatedly as a child, but no longer. Funny, when I read your post, I thought back to when I last had a flying dream, it was probably when I was a child too. Wonder what that's about. I used to have falling dreams as well, not nice. I must dream as an adult but very rarely remember anything. Do you dream much and can you remember them?

OP posts:
OutwiththeOutCrowd · 25/11/2018 07:35

I must be waking up during REM sleep quite a lot because I do recall dreaming quite often. My dreams as an adult frequently involve trying and failing to meet various obligations and feeling stressed - the product of an unquiet mind, I think!

Continuing the flying theme, here is Coldplay's 'O (fly on)'.

Maybe you have pleasant dreams and that's why you don't wake up during the dreaming phase of sleep? Let's hope that's how it is!

Vitalogy · 25/11/2018 17:37

Love that Coldplay one OutwiththeOutCrowd

That sounds troubling regarding your persistent stressful dreams. The mind is an amazing thing but can cause so much bother too. Are the Mindfulness type practices any use to you.

Do you think dreams are the minds way of working through things or in some cases a sort of supernatural intervention?

OP posts:
OutwiththeOutCrowd · 26/11/2018 08:40

Vitalogy, I'm quite drawn to practices rooted in Eastern spirituality. So, yes, mindfulness, meditation, yoga etc appeal. I listen to the Honest Guys guided meditations on Youtube. This can sometimes induce a more recuperative sleep.

I do think that dreams function as a way for the mind to explore unresolved issues. Not sure about supernatural intervention. I read about a Jungian type theory that flying dreams result from tapping into an ancient memory in the collective unconscious, though we don't have any flying ancestors on the evolutionary tree so I'm not sure that idea gets off the ground!

Perhaps, Rupert Sheldrake's morphogenetic fields could provide a mechanism for tuning into bird memories/experiences. (Speculative!)

Do you meditate or follow any Eastern practices yourself?

Vitalogy · 26/11/2018 09:18

Glad the meditations are helping you a bit. I have tried and had some nice moments but it turned into a chore at times so I stopped it. Something that needs practicing I think. I try to keep my life simple and quiet most of the time, I feel that helps. Trying to be in the moment when doing everyday tasks I've enjoyed. Stopping the mind chatter seems a constant goal but I do enjoy thinking and mulling too Smile

Yes Jung, what I've read/listened to of Jung makes sense to me. I have enjoyed listening to his interviews. I find him very calming too.
The flying dreams result from tapping into an ancient memory in the collective unconscious that you mentioned. If the consciousness/spirit spends time in all forms then this would make sense.

I like Rupert Sheldrake too.

One upon a time when we were birds. Smile

Sting - A Thousand Years

OP posts:
leafbud · 26/11/2018 11:14

I have had a few flying dreams before too. Funny, though, some I remember were focussed on 'how to fly' after discovering I could, in the dream, quite ordinarily. From what I remember it was a bit like skiing in terms of 'leaning' into turns. Grin

Anyway, another song:

Blackbird by The Beatles.

Vitalogy · 26/11/2018 11:33

leafbud Smile

I remember when I was a child at school on the top of the hill, which was probably just a slope, lol. I thought if I could flap my arms fast enough and run down the hill I would surely take off!

Eddie Vedder - can't keep

Vitalogy, Grin I remember a similar day. Making 'wings' with my friend by tying dolls clothes and blankets to our arms and running and jumping flapping them, climbing up on a chair and jumping off. We were convinced if we just tried hard enough...

Here's another

Vitalogy · 26/11/2018 12:01

Exactly, we just weren't flapping hard enough!

The line from song "Open our eyes and see the blessings in disguise" To true.

OP posts:
leafbud · 26/11/2018 12:08

Vitalogy, yes, we must've looked funny! I agree with you regarding blessings in disguise. I love this song too:

m.youtube.com/watch?v=4mMUJFAd4rQ

No flowery lyrics or vocal gymnastics, just very real and paired down.

Vitalogy · 26/11/2018 13:05

Raw, straightforward, honest.

Camomila · 02/12/2018 10:22

I have flying dreams sometimes, but they are anxiety dreams usually...like I'm drifting away and can't control where I'm going...

Back to songs:

Not a religious one at all but 'love ire and song' by frank turner makes me want to do some political activism whenever I hear it.

Also the rather cheesy hymn 'walk walk in the light'...when I was younger I always used to watch the DMs jiggle their babies on their hips to this at mass and it made me really want a family. When I finally had my own baby to jiggle and it got sung one day I was so happy I got a bit weepy Blush

I also really like the hymn 'tell out my soul' although turns out ive been singing it wrong all these years and its 'thus sings my soul'. I'd love to join a choir, I was in the school choir all the way through secondary school but you didn't have to be any good!

Vitalogy · 02/12/2018 16:50

Thanks for posting your picks Camomila. I found Frank Turner's Love. Ire and Song:

I'm not sure if I got the correct ones with the other two though.

That was a lovely story about you and your wee baby.

I have in the past thought about joining a choir too. Certainly lifts the spirits singing in company.
