Christian book recommendations for 4 year old

givemesteel · 08/09/2018 22:57

I attend church regularly, sometimes with my 4 year old but the Sunday school and family services go over his head at the moment.

But he asks alot of questions like, who's God, where's God, how did God make us, when did Jesus die etc

Stuff like this which I don't feel like I answer very well.

Does anyone have any book recommendations that answer these types of questions in a simple way?

I can see that there are lots of children's bible stories etc, which is all fine, but doesn't tackle the more tricky questions.

Thanks for your help!

Are you looking for a book to help indoctrinate him or open up his mind?

DieAntword · 09/09/2018 10:52

What denomination are you because the answers could be very different depending. There are children’s catechisms for catholics maybe something like that.

givemesteel · 09/09/2018 12:58

I'm CofE, my DH is Catholic but not particularly devout. I'm the more religious of the two of us.

So either really, but anything Catholic I'm less familiar with.

speakout I'm not sure how to answer that question. I want something simple so I don't want a book that says some people believe X, where as other people believe Y, as I think that can come later, at school. At 4 years old it's confusing enough as it is.

I just want something simple which teaches, who is God, Jesus, Holy Spirit and some basic principles of Christianity (eg love thy neighbour).

I also don't want anything that directly contradicts science (eg he knows that babies grow in their mother's womb etc).

If you are a multifaith household how do you want to deal with the contradictions? The Westminster confession (that CoE adheres to) is directly oppositional to the catholic catechism.

You could find a kids version of both (use the words “children’s catechism”) and talk about the differences together?

Nothing is going to deny babies growing in the womb but materials for children might gloss over anything sex related.

Also this would be a great question for your priest/vicar and Sunday school teacher.

Digestive28 · 10/09/2018 19:48

I would look to see if your town has a local Christian bookshop and go have a browse as the choice is massive. And second PP who said it’s a great set of questions for a vicar- my five year old regularly asks these things in church, currently obsessed with crucifixion which is interesting!

The Jesus big storybook bible is great for little kids. Or you could try Veggie Tales, my kids used to love them.

horseymum · 11/09/2018 16:54

The 'good book company' has lots of books for different age groups on different topics, might be worth a look.

takemeback · 08/10/2018 20:01

If you are catholic then I think there is a version of the catechism for children

PurpleAndTurquoise · 08/10/2018 21:55

The Jesus Storybook Bible is good.

Speakout I don't understand what you are asking the OP. Are you a gas-lighting atheist or are you trying to actually help the OP with her query? They are a Christian family, looking for books suitable for a 4 year old, to explain God and Jesus in simple language for a young child.

What about children’s bible study classes? We have been given a Bible last year for Christmas for the twins to read and I’ve read parts and bits of it to them occasionally.
Ask your church for some suggestions. I’m sure they will have some useful information and recommendations regarding your original question. There is a useful website for teaching the Bible but you have to pay to access everything- here’s a alternative website worth looking at

Why don't you wait until your child is old enough to make their own mind up rather than trying to influence it when they are only 4? What I mean by this is you said you want something that teaches who gold, holy spirit is etc, to me that is implying to the child that it is fact that they exist.

I would wait until your child is old enough to be able to understand that 'God' is just something that some people believe in and some don't

God not gold!

I love this book, the Catholic Catechism for kids, DD loves it too, although she's a bit older. It was mentioned by a pp upthread.

I think 4 is too young to understand it, really, but you could read it yourself and summarise the answers/give your own view.

It really is a great resource, covers all sorts of subjects. Especially if you're not confident giving answers yourself.

I love this one!

The Good Artist is an amazing booklet for children that shows the gospel from creation until salvation. In clear pictures with appealing tekst on 32 pages the “big line” of the Bible is told. At the end there are some verses from the Bible and a sinners prayer. The booklet is very popular among the children, but also adults enjoy the fresh and clear explanation of the gospel. It is a fruitful instrument for evangelism.

A Booklet in more then 20 language available. Go to our webshop: www.citybibles-webshop.com
