Ok so it is the age old question of...do you think there is anything after we snuff it? i ponder on this alot since my uncle died 18 mths ago in a freak accident.

How can "we" know so much about all different things such as the universe yet NO-ONE knows if there is anything after we die?

Also another thing that pops in my mind is how close my nan was to her sister, yet she hasn't "come back" to her, no funny feelings...nothing.

What is it all about? why do we have to wait for our time to go to know anything?sometimes i think there must be something more, other times i think nah!

so.......

Have you experienced anything with relatives or friends who has passed away?

I think we have to wait for it to 'know' in the sense of being in it.

I'm a Christian, so I have a belief about it that's informed by the bible, but it's no more certain in the experiential sense than anyone elses belief.

One of those things we have to take on faith. (and of course, I believe someone did come back to tell us about it, but that's my belief )

sorry to heart about your uncles, recent death.
You are going to get alot of different views with your op,
but I wonder if they will give you the answers you want.

I don't believe that there is anything that we would recognise as "living" after this life. I believe that the unique expereince of being us - the people we are now - ends when we die. We won't get the chance to be "us" with the same consciousness, the same emotions, the same characteristics anywhere else but here. I don't think people are reincarnated, live on in any other way or have spirits which are somehow "recycled". Every individual is unique, lives and then dies and is no more.

I think that human beings don't know anything else but the expereince of living and so they can't comprehend it all just coming to an end one day so they're almost bound to believe that life goes on somewhere else after an earthly life. It's kind of like a hope that a lot of people cling to.

As I see it, this is the only shot at life that a person will get. You're born, you live, you die. End of.

Not wishing to get too philosophical about it but if there is something else no one would know anything about it IYSWIM and I think all this being able to call up spirits is nonsense. Having said that, we'll now probably be inundated with posts from those who claim to have seen ghosts/been contaced by spirits. In my book that's the result of (a) a very vivid imagination or (b) wishful thinking.

Just my views although they'll probably offend someone somewhere!

Wotz..I am after all views as i dont really know what i believe tbh, thanks for the replies

I used to believe when you died, that was it. But when DS1 was born, he seemed to have a real knowing look about hime. He knew so much about things without having to be shown. It has made me wonder.

Wotz · 05/06/2007 21:46

My view, your are born, you live, you die.
Hopefully along the way you enjoy life and help others enjoy theirs and teach your children how to love, and care for the important things in life which have true value.

Maybe I should have that read out when they scatter my ashes!

divastrop · 05/06/2007 21:52

i was brought up as a catholic, and although i no longer practise,i do believe there is some form of life after death.i dont necessarily believe in heaven+hell, but i think there must be something else.if i didnt believe that then i dont think i would be able to cope with death,i wouldnt be able to talk to my dc about it,and life would seem pretty pointless.

fwiw i believe that some people can see spirits and ghosts.

Desiderata · 05/06/2007 21:53

I believe in reincarnation, but that's a slightly different matter. Relatives and friends will not return (not in my opinion), but the recycling of souls is as natural a point of view to me as the recycling of plastic bags.

That doesn't mean that all souls reincarnate. I believe that some are on the upward spiral, and some are on the downward. There are dying souls, and living souls.

I'm not new age at all. I don't believe in astrology, for instance. I just believe that some souls have a quantifiable energy that doesn't simply disappear at the point of death.

krazykoolkazza · 06/06/2007 09:32

Wotz "Hopefully along the way you enjoy life and help others enjoy theirs and teach your children how to love, and care for the important things in life which have true value".

If that's not a brilliant philosopy to live your life by I don't know what is. Who needs organised religion with a philosophy like that?

Nbg · 06/06/2007 09:42

I'm not entirely sure if there is anything but we have experienced weird goings on which seem to be connected to my grandad.

When he died my parents got his car. Whenever they visited me or I would see them, the car alarm would set itself off. For no reason, everytime we were there.
Then my parents bought a doorbell. Just a plain one that went ding dong, nothing fancy
Anyway, again whenever I was there or my auntie or cousins, the doorbell would chime like big ben. Just set itself off.

It was very weird but my mum commented that it must be my Grandad trying to say hello and it does make me wonder.

Wotz · 06/06/2007 10:55

Thanks krazykoolkazza, it is simple and it works for me.
My dad died of C when I was 12 and he was just 40, so I have spent the best part of nearly 30 years considering philosophy, religion & spirituality and this is my philosophy which helps me come to terms with most things.

caterpiller · 11/06/2007 22:05

I think it's a nice thought, but I would need hard evidence to believe it.

harrisey · 11/06/2007 23:03

I am sure there is someting after. Jesus said to the theif on the cross 'today you wil be with me in paradise'

I have spent the whole of last term at college exploring the meaning of salvation. My head is mince. But there must be something after. Does our consciousness expaire at death - I think not. Its too strong. But we need to be held to accoutn for our actions in life - I refer you to Matthew's gosple (cant remember the verses) and the parabke of the sheeo and the goats. We will be judges ob how we lived here and now. That scares me. What about the people I have unconsciusly exploited??? I have to correct that.

Tommy · 11/06/2007 23:17

pucca - on the your nan's sister not "coming back" to here. I always think that the last thing you say when someone is buried is "Rest in peace" so why should a person who has died come back to talk to loved ones?

FWIW I think when a person dies very young or in an accident it is always more diffcult to come to terms with their death as it upsets the natural order of things.

AbRoller · 11/06/2007 23:24

I believe in an afterlife. I believe my nan has been in my house since her passing and I regularly communicate with my angels and archangels. I believe we chose this life to learn something and we will have many lives from which to learn and then become guides to another spirit.

only my belief, I would never be offended if anybody thought I was cracked in the head - each to their own I say and I could be so wrong but I choose to trust my faith.

I agree with wotz, I just have a different belief that leads me to the same point - we all have a purpose in life, if thats to teach a child, to love a child, to help someone in need, to be a life partner or any of a million other reasons then we will learn from it - humility, patience, trust, love, forgiveness, many wonderful gifts.
